I would like to take my a4 shifter handle off and my console out to check some things, how hard is this to do?

get a screw driver flat head and pry out the staple behind the shifter, lift it off, unbolt all the bolts in the console compartment (4 i think) and the upper part should lift right out. then there are a few more bolts holding down the lower section. put your shifter in 1st gear and the parking break up to make it easier to lift it all out.

Not really a staple, more like a C clip, but you get the idea.

In the front of "tail" of the the shift **** (facing the radio), there is a slot with a staple just like WS6NIGHTMARE said. Pry out the staple and pull the handle up to remove it.

Put electrical tape around the E-brake handle before you pull the console up, or you will scratch the **** out of it.

Also, if you have a coin holder in the compartment in the console, take it out because there are two screws under it. Sounds obvious, but dumber things have happened.
