Default Checking oil pan-to-block clearance

The last step to assembling my short-block. I got a hold of the GM tools to install the front and rear covers. That worked out great. Now I'm concerned about getting the correct clearance between the oil pan and block rear face. The factory book specifies it should not be more than 0.010-inch. I guess that's to make sure the bellhousing mates evenly and doesn't stress the pan/gasket surface. So I'm supposed to use a straightedge - I guess against the machined surfaces at the bolt areas on the pan and the rear of the block. It seems like it could get tricky to accurately get between 0 and 0.010. Anyone have any tips?

Use the bell housing to align the oil pan, then install/TQ the bolts. Works fine for me every time.

Thanks. I was thinking about doing that. I guess I'll take the bellhousing off the (A4) trans and bolt it up. I was hoping to avoid taking the engine off the stand until I was ready to install it, but this sounds like the best way to do it.

So what do you do, bolt up the pan, leaving the bolts loose, then mount the bellhousing onto the block with it is being supported by a cherry picker?then tighten the pan?
