Default general timing question

When you advance timing, aren't you firing when the piston is further from TDC? Also, how does retarding timing help with detonation?

As the mixture ignites the pressure pushes the piston down short of an explosion. If the timing is too far advanced the piston can't get away quick enough and an explosion (detonation) occurs. This a layman explanantion but you should get the idea. Your right about the timing advance (before TDC).
