160* Duralast Thermostat...
I am looking for a 160* thermostat for my LS1. At my local Autozone they carrie a Duralast, and a Hypertech. The price difference is I think $32 for the Duralast, and about $72 for the Hypertech. Anyone tried one of these Duralast ones and had/heard any problems?

I picked up a 180* thermostat for around $22. This included the housing, gasket and thermostat as a single unit. FYI you should run 180* on a bolt-on car. These engines prefer to run hot. Just tune the fans to come on sooner. for why people run the 180* over the 160*. Good luck either way though

you can still get the 160 and get a manual fan switch when you want the engine temps to drop down lower for racing and such, just dont cruise around with it at 160.
the reason people say you dont want to tune for a 160 on a street car is because gas mileage will suffer and you really dont see any power increase from it. engines today are engineered to run at hotter temps where the fuel can have a more complete burn.

Why buy any thermostat?
Just program the fans to turn on earlier. The stock thermostat works fine in my setup, 500+ rwhp.
Sub 200 temps all day every day here in sunny FL.
btw, these motors weren't designed to ever run that cool (160). Too cold is just as bad as too hot. The reason gas milage is affected is because the engine is not operating at an optimal temperature.

I've had both 160 and 180 and right now am back to the 160* always with the fans set to come on at 185. No problems at all and no difference between the two except I can force the fans on with the 160 and cool the car to around 172-175 deg minimum. Even in the winter the car still temps in the low 180 range with the 160 in there and I've had no experiences of the claims of poor mileage, closed loop problems, power loss ect..ect. The thin radiators in the Ls1 f-bodes are probably to thank for that.
