Default ? about porting stock heads

Thinking about porting my 853's as a cheap upgrade. I can't afford aftermarkets, so is there any tips or concerns I should know 'bout?

I just installed my home ported 853's today!...that along with comp's XR275HR, yella rockers, ebay (ssautochrome) headers & ls6 intake..here's the link of my cost for the heads port & polished heads

can't wait to get it back together & dyno tuned

i think porting 241 heads is much better than 853 as i know,but anyway it doesnt compare to any aftermarket heads ,but it will gives you few ponies.
it worth it with 241 but i dont know about 853 i didnt saw any one dyno it.

Save your money and buy some budget CNC heads like Patriots.
If you do take this on yourself. You will need to get the heads resurfaced, and recut the valve seats and valves. Because unless you have done this a lot, you will more than likely slip with the hand grinder. All it takes is a kiss.

TIP: If you want to do this, don't get carried away with porting. Just clean up the sharp edges under the valves (The bowl area), and blend the short radiuss, port match the intake manifold with the head, and do some smoothing in the ports, without removing a lot of material. You can polish the exhaust ports, but don't do a mirror polish on the intakes. The hardest parts is polishing the combustion chamber. This is where you will probably hit a valve seat. You can put some valves in it. But you can't get right up to the seat with them in. If you have a buddy with a lathe, he can cut a pair of valves that are thin on the face, so they will seat flush.

I am think of doing the same thing since i am going to have some free time on my hands, but it will be my first port job is it hard to do, or do you just have to be careful?

Any write up or a how to?

ive seen those heads as cheap as 50 bucks a set in the classifieds section....i say port away....it usualy only costs 100 bucks to have heads rewoprked "valves and seats reground".....once ported the 241s are no better....the main thing is that the 241s wer cast a lil smoother from the getgo.....just take your time...gasketmatch it all and polish the exhaust side.....i wouldnt polish the chamber.....

I am thinking about giving it a try on some old used head once i come around to it and see how it goes. Does this seam good as a guide line, http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.aspx.

I did some 241's for a friend. Just a mild clean up on the intake side, some bowl work and port matched the exhaust..He made 413/381 to the wheels going through the stock mufflers. With 232/236 114 cam, 85mm MAF, ported stock 241 heads, LS6 intake, Kooks headers and 3" xpipe, stock mufflers on his 99 Vette..

Is there any tricks to removing or installing the heads? I've heard it's a pain to do. Also, what's the best way to port match the intake?
