C6 Z06 cam
i'm getting the G7X4 cam installed on my C6 Z06, they (LG Motorsports) won't give out the specs, but they say it's something like 570-580. what does that mean? i don't know much about cam specs and what they mean (hence asking in the Newbie section), is that a big cam, what kinda performance should i expect, daily drivability? (i kinda don't even know what a cam does.. allow more fuel to go in thru the valves?)
(i realize i shoulda researched it before i actually got it, but i had 10k burning a hole in my pants). thanks for any help!!

cam controls valve's opening and closing, your new cam will hold each set of valves open longer and close them faster. 570. would be a description of the valve lift. Thats pretty tame compared to cams people run nowadays. Duration is more important to determine driveability though. Valve lift relates to spring life more than anything

Correct that the cam controlls the valves.
Basicly, the air goes into the intake after it goes through the filter and mas airflow sensor and TB and all that. Fuel injectors spray fuel very precisely into this air. The air is flowing too the cylinders via the cylinder heads, and to get into or out of the cylinders, it goes through valves in the heads. The cam rotates, contacting the valve train, which contacts the valves themselfs. And the shape of the ovals (lobes) on the cam shaft determine when the valves open and close and how far they open. So you can imagine how presice each lobe must be. You new cam will open the valves longer and farther. This means that more of that air/fuel mix from the intake manifold will get into the cylinders to be burned, which makes more power. This power allows you to shred tires, win races, look cool, and generally have a good time.

ok ok i'm retarded. i called LG because i was worried about getting a smaller cam, and they said those numbers on their website (570-580) is for the C5, and they haven't updated it for the C6. the G7X4 has over 610 lift (tho he still couldn't give exact specs). i'm feeling better now. can't wait till that beast is ready!!

i've heard a discussion just like this before about an LG cam. that's not the lift numbers, that is the estimated rwhp numbers you can expect after you get it installed and tuned.
correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure i'm right.
EDIT - just noticed the post above, he beat me to it but yea, i knew i was right. that's the estimated rwhp on a stock Z06 with a tune. obviously, if you have other mods, it'll be even higher. that is NOT the lift. .570 on a 427 ain't ****.

I'm guessing if he has 10k burning a hole in his pocket and doesn't know anything about cams he isn't going to be doing it himself.
There's not much relation between lift and duration. You could have a 248/252 cam with .570/.580 duration or a 224/224 with the same lift. Duration, LSA, ICL, and Overlap have more to do with how a cam will act vs the lift.
