Pontiac GTO 2004-2006 - Question all will hate me for

I have my trans am for playing and racing.
I have a 2004 GMC Z71 4X4 fully loaded. but i hate driving it everyday, i like cars (handle better) and a manule tranny. I drove my TA for 4 years as it sits so this big truck is a real bore to me.
going to sell it and buy a GTO to drive every day. BUT i still have to pull a 19 foot mastercraft to the river. think this car will do it? i know gowing up our gran prix pulled out 17 foot boaw rider, and my uncle had a datson that he pulled his 19 foot bowrider as well.
so I was thinking about on the the hitches they make all it has to do this for is the rest of this summer after that no more.

will look funny, but the hitch can come back off after the last few summer months

Check the Australian GM websites for the Holden Monaro. It comes with a rear valence that has a removable square hole that hides a trailer hitch. They probably have towing ratings posted over there.

yea i read that one, nice cheap hitch will work, but will it handle the boat? its less than 3000 lbs, but do not know the toung weight. and how bad will the rear squat haha

I was thinking that gas shocks or something might be needed...

The tongue weight on that Curt hitch is only 200lbs. If you had a long enough trailer, then the hitch itself could handle 3,500lbs (that you said you were safely under), but I would look into a Holden hitch for several reasons (most already mentioned). I know the power plant in the GTO will certainly handle it. After that, I would say that the real weak link is going to be in the IRS. Shocks would be a purchase I made and installed at the same time as the hitch. The good news is that drag shocks are readily available online, and they sound like the best candidate to get the job done.

theres an lt1 ta that runs around here with a hitch never seen them tow anything but they have a hitch lol

i towed a 17 ft boat with my 87 formula and then my 96 TA but the back end squatted real bad on both (they hit going over even little speed bumps and dips in the road) and the auto trans went out on the 87 i am sure due to pulling the boat up the ramp.

i bought a truck when i got a bigger boat. cars just arent made for towing. not saying they physically cant do it, a GTO has the power but IMO it would rag it out real quick

I just read where the IRS on the GOAT will loose alignment under load. I would say simply that even under the best measures, I wouldn't tow very much very far with it. I got maybe 1800lbs on a trailer and took it home from Maryland before I stuck her in the trees acting dumb. I'm remembering mention to a friend that it handled a little different after the long haul. Am I saying that I think towing a trailer wiped out my car? Certainly not...I did that. Could alignment have played an issue? Who's to say.

that exactly what i was thinking and the bags are not that expensive at 90 bucks from speed inc

also it only has to do this this year, as next year the boat i will have will be in dry storage, so only like 2-3 months of going to river on the weekend, so maybe 10 times??

anything can obviously be done. But if you damage the the irs because of to heavy of a load, the warranty will not cover the damage if they see the hitch. so obviously a bolt in. good luck

I would never even think about pulling a trailer with my gto, but my work truck is a Dodge Diesel. With only 200 pound tongue weight, I guess I'd go for it, if it means having a gto as a daily driver. But, if you're only gonna pull it about 10 times, I'd just rent a truck or suv to pull the boat. I know I've rented a jeep liberty for a week, with unlimited miles for about 120 something, but that was with a free upgrade.

I know how you feel, trucks are hard on fuel, handle like crap. I have no choice, can't drive the gto around the farm. :)
