Rev To Redline
Hi LS1 guys, Does any one know what would happen to my Camaro SS if i reved it to the redline, because my frends think im a chicken for not doing so but I don't want to trash my over pampered SS. Would it cut itself out or would it blow-up,what do you guy think?

it would be fine, its not by any means GOOD for your motor, and if you do it once or twice its not TERRIBLE for your motor, just avoid doing it every 10 minutes. and dont put it past 5500 to be safe.... no need to go to 6k or 6200

As for reving to the redline at 6k it wont really hurt, just dont do it all the time. The rev limiter at 6250 will stop any serious over-revving but 6k and higher will take some engine life away. Just shift at 5500. It sounds like your friends drive hondas or something that isn't worth taking care of
Dont listen to them, peer pressure sucks. It just cost me a tranny rebuild.

engines are meant to spin that high with a load on it to keep things internally stable, free revving isn't that cool. your friends are just a bunch of badasses. plus if your cars loud enough with headers n stuff it sounds pretty good just snappin it to 3500-4000 real quick once

i'm sorry but unless your motor is tired 6k is fine. its the valve springs and push rods that are the weakest point. a few ls1s have bad oil pumps which isnt under your control. there are people on this board with upgraded valve springs who rev to 7k. just do a search. the ls1 is a solid motor. ps i'm a conservative guy who use to drive pontiacs, 5k max for my 455. call GM if you need a 2nd opinion.

I thought that the motor could take it; GM probably would have pushed this engine to its max rpm and held it there to see if it could take it and for how long, but I’m not sure, but would it make a difference if the motor has low mileage what do you guys think?

I don't see the problem with 5500-6k, especially if you are doing it with a load on the engine and not just free revving it. Heck I know A lot of LT1 guys run their engines between 5500-5800, myself included from time to time but I don't do it that often. Some guys even run up to 6200 at the strip with stock bottom end LT1s, though I don't recommend going that high with that engine. If an LS1 can't handle that there's probably something wrong with it. I mean heck the LT1 only has a 2-bolt main and it takes it just fine! By no stretch do I think that it should be done all the time because that will have a very big toll on your engine, but if you just do it occasionally I would be amazed if you got an issue from it unless you have a very high mileage engine.
