Major Problem: Piston doesnt clear Reluctor Wheel?
I am assembling a 409 Stroker using an Iron 6.0 litre block bored to 4.030" and I'm using a 4.0" Lunati Crank.
I'm using Diamond pistons and Manley rods. I just put in the first piston, and the engine will not turn over all the way because the reluctor wheel hits the bottom of the piston near the side. What do I need to do to fix it? The only possible fix I can see is either grinding the reluctor wheel or the piston, but I thought you weren't supposed to do either of those. And the rods clear the block just fine. Plenty of clearance there.
Can anyone give me a solution ASAP on how to make the piston clear the reluctor wheel? I'm trying to finish my engine this weekend.
Thanks

The #8 piston skirt should be "notched" to clear the reluctor wheel when using the 4" stroker crank. Did you tell Diamond you were using this crank? There should 7 identical pistons and one for the #8 cylinder. Make sure you are not trying to install the wrong piston here.

I dont remember ever seeing a piston that had the notch in it, but I will check again tomorrow. Is there anyway I can notch the piston myself, or would it be best to get a new piston from Diamond? Will this effect the balancing of the motor at all?
Thanks again

Who did you get the pistons from? Either way you can bring me the #8 piston and I will clearance it for you, no charge. I can turn it around in a day. This will not affect the balance, putting that notch in takes out less than 5 grams. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Thanks Chris,
I'll see you on Monday since none of my pistons are notched.

I am going to jump on the bandwagon as well and say that I understand fully now why Joe (Joe Prince, AKA JPR) uses Diamond pistons as well. He went through a good bit of R&D with Diamond putting together a great package and now I see why.
