Well, I had a similar noise...the guys on my other site said it was a piston slap? I'm not sure, but they said its common on LS1's and not a big deal. However, I haven't really noticed it much anymore, well, that's since my belt is focked up.

i had a sound like that when one of my belts gave out.

Dont ever feel dumb by taking your car to the dealership. Thats how problems get worse when they arent taken care of. If you dont feel comfortable, just give them a call and tell them the problem.
if my dealer didnt void my warrenty, id hangout there all the time

i had a pretty bad tick and when i took the valve covers off i pulled out a pushrod that was in two pieces lol. but if it is just at idle i dunno, if it's a pushrod or lifter the tick will get faster with the rpms

aluminum blocks trasfer noise much better than iron.

You may have a little piston slap, but a lot if it is just the sound eccoing through the block. The noise gets really bad when you start doing high lift cams and heavy springs.

sounds to me like it's the lifters. As my oil loses its viscosity, the sound seems to get worse. As mentioned before, does the speed of the sound increase with rpm's or is it constant?

Honestly... my motor makes all kinds of racket hot or cold. I've tried different oils, finally just decided the performance was worth a little noise. Figure if it was going to come apart, it would have already done it
