My oil pump went south (99 SS) a few years ago and the guage acted this way - so beware.
You can replace the sensor/presure sending unit, but I would watch this like a hawk.

You can take the oil filler cap off during idle to confirm oil is being pumped to the rockers, I suppose.

This would make me nervous. ...any metal shavings in the oil?

Yeh, but mine did that too. One day, I started the engine and - no pressure!

Factory pumps from the early days were problematic.

Changing the oil pump is a PITA.

Pull the raditor, hoses, belts, and crank pulley bolt and crank pulley. Pull the timing cover, timing chain, loosen the oil pan, and finally get the pump and disconnect pickup tube. Replace the pump and use a new oil pickup tube O-ring and a new TTY crank bolt. Replace all the junk you just removed in reverse order.

Uhg! I don't ever want to change that *&^% again!

GM had many failures on 98/99 LS1 cars. To me, it is amazing that they avoided a manditory recall for faulty oil pumps.

I called the dealer who told me to run the engine with no presure since GM would likely buy me a new engine! Right!

I can't remember why these pumps went bad but the pump gears were not the issue. I think it might have been faulty springs inside the pump that govern the pressure, however.

You could use an external pressure guage to confirm pressure but that will not give you any assurance that the spring in the pump might malfunction at any time in the future and shut off oil completely.

I think the pressure unit (brass) is on the driver's head near the 1st plug.

also just had someone pm me this

Hey, I have the same problem as you. I have a 99 T/A and my gauge does the exact same thing. I seriously doubt it's your oil pump because mine was doing it before I swapped a cam in(new ported ls6 pump) and is still doing the same thing. Most likely it's your oil pressure sending unit. Let me know how things work out for you.

Well did the oil change and went from M1 0w-40 to M1 5w-30 man the oil pressure is up more! was around 70psi for a while then dove it around in 95 deg heat and never got below 45 psi1 but still bounces around like it sticking when i let off!

One more question when i turn the car off the oil pressure gauge sticks at 40psi then you turn the key and it drops down to 0 then when it cranks it goes where it should! Is that noramal?

i don't really know much about this stuff... but I wonder if you were to disconnect the battery so that everything resets and then reconnect it if that would have any effect on it...?

Sounds like a faulty oil sending unit and not your gauges/cluster.

Take the manifold off and replace the sending unit. I think it was like 35 bucks. I joined the broken oil sending unit club on my ls6 intake swap. The damn brake booster line got caught and broke it. On the bright side I added oil pressure by switching sendin units

is the sending unit the one on the back of the manifold everyone talks about breaking when they do an IM swap?
