Default How many wires on the alternator

Is there only 1 black wire on the alternator? 99 z28 LS1? I am doing poly motor mounts and see a small 18awg wire that is red and looks like it went on the alternator. Any info would be great. By the way these motor mounts are a pain in the ***!

there is the main cable that goes from the battery to the alternator and the exciter wire which is the small gauge red wire that should be attached to a connector on the alternator. sounds like you took out the alternator and riped the exciter wire out of the connector. that Wire has to be connected as it controls the voltage output of the alternator.

on the alternator there should be a larger GM weatherpack connector on the top. Its a pain in the *** to get too and you won't be able to see the connector when the alternator is on the car but that is where the red wire should be connected too.

Don't try to put it back together if you snapped it right off the connector. Just go to the dealership and get a new connector. They are between $20-$30. They'll give you one with 4 wires, just cut the one you don't need..............
