Unhappy GTO T-56 vs. F-Body T-56

OK people looking for facts & opinions out there! I got a T-56 out of a 04 Goat w/18k miles on it, that I'm installing in my 67 Camaro. Hopefully I'm gonna be looking at @ 420 hp. Should I do anything to this tranny before I stick it in? Does the 04 T-56 have all the same weak points that the F-Body had (Need the drill mod, weak forks, etc.)? I've noticed that the GTO and the Vette tranny cost an additional $331(www.SixSpeedsInc.com) to get rebuilt...are they similar? And one more question, will the F-Body Master Cylinder & line work on the GTO and possibly (if I upgrade) the LS7 slave cylinder? Thanks!!

The GTO transmission is superior to the F-body transmission as it has triple cone synchros. The only other transmission comparable to it are the Corvette specific ones. So, you did VERY good getting a GTO transmission.

I'm not positive but I think '03 and later t56's had steel forks.

Amber and Joe at T56 can set you straight on anything you need to do or not do. As long as everything is clean, and there is not a ton of debris on the magnet, you are probably ok to go. At 420 RWHP, you should be ok for anything you want to do.

The slave cylinder is the same, and the F-body line you use should hook up to it with no issues.

Another benefit is that you have a .84 5th gear.... vs. the F-body .75... so you have a much closer ratio 5th gear and power won't fall off much.

i went to the GTO tranny aswell back in Jan, i LOVE IT!!!! for my setup it works perfect w/ th 4.10 gears. still get 20mpg. daily driven.

since i drag race alot, i shift into 4th gear before the 1/8mi and pull 4th through the traps.

its alot smoother and not as notchy as the fbod t56

-good luck

I was concerned about that as well. I'm looking into swapping in a M12 T56, but the dropoff between 3rd and 4th is putting me off. I do a lot of roll racing, and I'm generally starting in third. Dropping off almost 1900 RPMs when I shift could be a problem.

I hadn't heard about the later transmissions having steel shift forks. Anyone care to chime in on if this is true?

dont worry about the drop from 3-4. if you have 4.10s like me you start out in 3rd and end in 4th dont have to worry about shifting 10x

I am pretty sure the 1-2-3 ratios are lower because the car is heavier, ( I was told this by a GM mech) AND the slave is the same other than you dont have to do the drill mod with the GTO slave.

the mn12 tranny has the same gearing as the c5z06, except 5th and 6th are geared a lil different.

the restriction is not in the slave, it is in the line connecting to the master. You will still need to do the drill mod if you havent already.

not sure about the trannys differences as it is..but so long as it is built by a reputable shop you should not have a problem... ie: T56 rebuilds...Tick Performance...

you can...but the connection to the slave from the line won't fit up...you will need to either use an Fbody line which would be plug/play,

or pull the connection fitting off the Fbody slave and use a GTO connection.
If you have a junk GTO slave sitting around to get a fitting off of..otherwise I doubt you can buy just the fitting w/o buying a whole new GTO slave.
