Well, GM did make a 4.3L V6, but not for any f-bod. The only 4.6L engine I can think of is a V8 and its in a FORD. Sounds like your "student" is seriously LACKING an EDUCATION!

Northstars are 4.6 litres and they are V8's
3.8 Turbo was the engine in the `89 Turbo Trans Am
But from `79-81 there was a 4.9 Litre available with and without turbo

If it's a 02 Trans Am a 346 LS1 V8. If it's just a plain Firebird then it's a 3.8 V6. GM has never had a 4.6 V6. They had the 4.3 in the 80's - 90's on trucks then the 3.4 or 3.8 in the 4th gen V6 F-Body's.
