Default *solved* low oil pressure after cam + head swap

I just recently did a cam swap due to a spun lifter. I replaced oil pump with a std pump from SDparts, new oring, etc.

Oil was 5qt 10w30 castrol syn blend, 1qt 20w50. Fram tough guard oil filter.

I couldnt remember how my pcv went back together, so i just kind of guessed: crossover from back of drivers valve cover to passenger. Passenger front valve cover -> pcv -> front of intake. throttle body was left uncapped.

I was getting 40psi cold idle 20psi hot idle. It would rise with RPMs.

This morning, i changed the oil and used the same type oil, but a Mobil 1 filter. I redid the PCV to factory layout using the ghetto rubber T that is always soggy and leaking.

Now I get 60psi cold idle and 40psi hot idle.

I'm not sure which part helped it, but I figured I'd post here because a search didn't help me when I needed it.

I am having the same problem but i changed my oil pump and nothing changed. I wonder if the PCV helped you. Could that cause the oil pressure to be low or maybe read low? Mine sits at 20psi hot and 40 cold.

A few people have had trouble w/ the fram filters restricting oil flow.

I think you should change the filter after 200 miles after a heads/cam swap. All the graphite from the stock head gasket gets in the filter and restricts flow.

You spun a lifter ? As in it turned in the retainer ?

I never heard of a "spun lifter" on a roller cam engine.

If pressure is low after a H/C swap, I would suspect the O-ring on the oil pump pick-up tube.

The oil pick-up tube design is poor on our engines and has been the source of many pressure related issues after a tear down.

I assume it would take a pile of crud to restrict a new oil filter but it is a good idea to swap them out soon after a tear down, anyway. Fram filters are not the best, however.

I don't know if the lifter spun or the valve spring gave out.. but either way it ground the roller off of it and it spun a little in the bore.

If you had vacuum on all of the PCV lines then that would cause a lot of negative crankcase pressure. The PCV system cannot work without an air inlet to equalize pressure and allow airflow. I would guess the lack of pressure was caused by all the vacuum in your case, it would certainly cause your guage to read way off.

Since the oil pressure sensor would be reading relative pressure, I doubt you actually experienced low oil pressure.

I've seen several threads about a bad batch of lifter tray I think, that allowed the lifter to rotate in the cup and it tore the cam and lifter up pretty bad. Do a search (assuming it's working) and you'll probably find a few threads on it.

Like, all the graphite from a gasket when you clean the deck? It turned my oil into mud.
