Default comp 212/218-.558/.563-115 vs 216/220

I've been trying to pick a cam lately. I've almost ruled out the LS6 cam because it really doesn't make much more power at low rpms over stock. I'm looking for a good street cam that will work with stock heads and make some nice torque numbers.

I've been looking at the comp cams grinds...
212/218 .522/.529 114
216/220 .525/.532 114
212/218-.558/.563 115
I haven't seen much on the last cam, I'd like to hear some feed back on the last cam, it's looking like a nice sleeper cam.

Here is what I want to do...I want to use my stock heads, the cam must work well with stock heads. I have a set of 02 LS6 springs so I would like the cam to work with these springs. I may or may not add some mid length headers later on, like a Mac or Bassani, but for right now I'm using my '02 exhaust manifolds.

I want the car to idle as close to stock as possible, a little lope is acceptable but the car should have perfect street manners as the car is driven daily. Any opinions?

For what you want a Comp XR273HR would be perfect. Specs are 220/224 .530/.534 112 LSA. .563 lift is too much for LS6 springs unless you get some LS6 sodium filled valves, but $$$.

Your last cam choice is the LS6 street re-placement cam. Pulls to 6700.
However, for low-midrange in town driving, I will go for the first choice, good idle, no computer tuning and your LS6 springs will work.

if u want the best idle, get the last one, on the 115lsa... the 1st one will make good torque, and peak around 5800, the 216/220 will work well also, but be a little 'rougher', and peak around 6000... Cal's cam on the 112lsa, will idle TOO rough for u...

I'm pretty sure I had better stay at 114lsa or better for idle quality.

The 212/218-.558/.563 115 cam looks good, but I really think it would need better springs than my LS6 springs. I'm pretty sure this cam wouldn't need much tuning either.

I have the same requirements as you in regards to a cam since mine is a daily driver and I wanted ZERO drivability problems. The cam I got is a Comp Cam 216/220 .571/.581 114, this cam idles like stock, has a BABY lope to it, and pulls really hard, peaks @ 6400. I'm running Comp 918's and Hardened pushrods as well.

Dyno'd 390RWHP & 382 RWTQ, on stock heads, all boltons, LS1 Edit for A/F, RPM.

It ran a 12.6 & 115MPH on pepboy tires 2.2 60'.

Is this a custom grind?

That's true, the one I sugested will have some lope but not all that bad, and you said a little lope was OK. How smooth the idle is depends a lot on the idle speed you select as well. I think you will like the power output a lot better than those other smaller cams. Duration is what makes power more than lift. Of course this is all pretty subjective and what is acceptable to one person is not to another.

Comp Cam 216/220 .571/.581 114
Is this a custom grind?
I'm not sure, I bought it from JPR. It is a VERY odd cam though compared to the normal 224 cams. super high lift and low duration. It seems to work good though, very tame.

That combination of high lift and low duration can result in a lot of valve train noise and stress. Does your's have the "sewing machine" sound?

I prefer the 220/224 530/534 as well. It won't stress your valvetrain as much(keep the LS6 springs), and if you're looking for more power later, you can add headers and/or a mild head port. Good Luck!!

Yah, it sounds like a Singer Sowing Machine! Really, it's not that bad like people portrey it to be. Can't even hear it over the Exhaust

Any one using the 212/218 cams? Or can anyone post some dyno sheets for the 212/218 cams?
