Sometimes, when I press on the accelerator a bit then quickly let off then immediately press it down again the engine seems like it "misses" or "backfires," even though it doesn't seem to actually backfire. I don't know why it does that.

my car does the same thing. I cant figure it out either. i have just learned not to hit the gas hard when less than 1500 rpm. putting in my 3600 stall made it less noticable by far so untill it goes to the shop for another reason ill live with it as i have spent many hours and threw money at it with no sucess.

It's called stalling it out cause you are dumping in more Fuel than it can handle at that moment..
I do the same and mine gives you whiplash..

could that really be the o2 sensors? ive had this happen i think.i was under the impression it was from poor exhaust flow...

i could be the o2's but you can check that eaisily. Its not the o2's on mine. Ill try pulling some fuel from the low end throttle blip and see if it helps.

What I said earlier plus the fact of when you let off the Timing retards for a little bit..so when you get back in it rapidly you will pop out the Intake.

Hell that sounds like the timing and throttle are out of alighnment when you hit it again. Maybe this could be due to a stretched timing chain? I have had this problem with a couple of older high mileage vehicles, slop in the chain.

Hey, I didn't even think about that. But what about the perceived slight "miss" during normal acceleration/driving? Would bad oxygen sensors cause that?

Yes. That's exactly what you would notice from bad o2s since that is when they are operating. Also, you might notice that the car runs fine when cold (first few minutes) but then gets bad once it warms up, since the o2s are not used when the engine is in open loop (cold).

I had that same problem. I would have a huge surge/miss/backfire, same RPM range, usually at highway speeds 55-60. Around that time my transmission went out. I had it replaced. That problem has not resurfaced. I still do this day do not know why it happened. I'm glad I don't have that problem. My O2's are pretty contaminated too.
