this has been done since converters were made...yes its worth doing....you will notice a difference in power....
there was a thread a month or so ago where a member here gained over10 rwhp from gutting his cats....

Sell the cats for $125 (to the guy on the board that buys them) and put the money towards a set of headers.
No sense in throwing money out in the trash.
Personally, I prefer cats, as it keeps the exhaust from stinking so bad. You won't notice 10 hp (at most) very much.

I have an ory myself and an orh on my mustang......but if he is looking for a cheap few hp and his state requires the converters to be on the vehicle....I see nothing wrong with it.....

i did it to mine awhile back i felt a deferences but if i knew that guys was buying for that much i would have sold them and got some header but if you don't got the extra cash just gut them

Just get headers and an ORY. Don't eat for a month or something. 
If you are going to do something, do it right. You won't be able to "feel" a difference with gutted cats anyways. You can feel gutted cats just about like you can feel the FRA mod. 
But I then again, every little bit adds up. Or if you dont wanna have to jack with emissions guys, get a y-pipe w/ high flow cats (and gut those!).
