Arrow --->>> Build My Exhaust <<<---

OK, so here goes. I just found out my 99 HOSS does NOT have aftermarket headers (after already being informed it was modded with Hooker headers); to top this off, my Uncle had 3" Flowmaster cat-back installed. It sounds sick as hell but I KNOW this is not doing CRAP for performance

I have been looking at going the Kooks route for headers and catted Y and probably Magnaflow for the catback. According to Kooks homepage this will run me $2,251.79 (or add Corsa cat-back for a price of $2,705.13). Or possibly keep the Flowmaster cat-back???

So here is your chance to tell me what route YOU would go even if you do not think Kooks is the way to go. YOU TELL ME (and do not give me the "check the stickies and LS1sounds line) I am in Iraq and have VERY limited time to get this installed/completed.

**Price options here are fairly open**

NOTE: NO H/C package YET.

EDIT: NOT REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT "BANG FOR THE BUCK DEALS". I want what's best for my baby

You can always go the ebay stainless header route, and save $1500ish. Ive got them and they work well. The flowmaster is not really hurting you thaaat badly.

Well I am not saying that the Flowmaster is killing me, I am stating that I do not believe in having a catback with stock headers (especially since I can afford to have them replaced and upgraded). I am trying to figure out what LS1Techies say their opinions are for getting mine upgraded and if I should keep the Flowmaster when I upgrade or go with an alternate catback.

NOTE: I see I am not the only one currently requesting opinions on exhaust systems:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/761383-qtp-american-racing-help-me-out-guys.html

Here the debate includes American Racing (ARH). I have never heard of this option. :hide:

I would get good quality SS LTs

Next comes the mid pipe. (H, X or Y)

Finally a good SS C/B

from my experinece here is what i would do

Kooks or QTP LTs

Kooks or Pacesetter Y Pipe, Magnaflow X pipe or H pipe

And for a C/B i would do GMMG or Corsa, that is if you do a Y pipe.. Don't forget your cats...

and if you do x or h pipe, that is up to you.

i have sound clips of GMMG (y pipe) Magnaflow (x pipe) or 1 chamber flows (h pipe)

good luck

Torchd, your TA sounds pretty damn nice although I was only able to view your "Walk Around" vid.

This is what is stuck in my mind right now unless someone can give me better info that I have currently found: Kooks Headers and catted Y with Corsa catback.

Let me hear ya Techies

from my experience the flowmaster IS hurting your performance as bad as what people claim.

IMO if money is no object for your car a nice set of stainless steel headers and a Corsa catback would be great!

first off a flowmaster catback may sound good but it looses your car power . there are plenty of other catbacks that sound good and flow better .

kooks is some if not the best headers out there though you can get some longtubes that make close to the same power and have enough change left over to get some heads .

if money is not an object the best exhausts i have heard are cusotm jobs . by this i mean besides the headers of your choice an exhaust shop can fab you up some duals . since you want a good system look at getting a panhard bar relocation kit that will allow you to run dual pipes over the rearand then you can run the pipes into some mufflers of your choice and tips .

Would I even be able to run duals over the axle considering that my HOSS is lowered with Hotchkis (I believe it is the 1" set). I was just thinking staying with the Y pipe for clearance issues but you may know something that I do not (and that is why I love this board )

And I was certain that I had once read of Flowmaster being an LS1 power robber.

And now I know for fact NOT to keep the SloCrapper (flowmaster - more like lack there of) catback

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/583067-dyno-tells-flowmasters-true-flow.html

^^^---Proof

So now it's really down to the catback decision: Corsa or Magnaflow. I am partial to Corsa since I heard it on my buddy Tony's old red Z28 (JUSTAZ)

I have kooks LT's and catted Y through a Loud mouth 2. I like it. And LM's are cheap. I think it was 1,100 or 1,200 for the kooks set up.

How loud is your setup Erik? Just curious.

Edit: Nevermind, I found your thread 104db

I personally do not think its that loud but sounds good till the upper RPM's when it starts roarin. All around I think its a good set up. The motor vehicle doesnt think so though. It failed the db test at 104 db at 2500 rpms. Gotta figure out what imm gonna do there.

edit: haha seriously I thought it be pushin it but it really doesnt seem that loud. I had my bro drive it around so I could hear it. You can keep it tame if your easy on it. But give it some gas and it starts gurglin deep. I could hear him at WOT a good half mile away out of the neighborhood.

If you want to keep a y there is a good sticky in the internal forum where patrick g has a 500rwhhp thread for ls1 346 block . He uses LG headers I belive with a custom fabed y thengoes to a 4" Mufflex catback that isa proven system .

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/732392-recipe-500-rwhp-heads-cam.html

It is a good read just check out the thread for the exhaust pics he has got . On the las page or next to last page there are a few more pics of good and bad y pipes and duals.

There are multiple options.

1.) QTP, Kooks, American Racing headers with a O/R Y and a cutout. Keep the Flowmaster.

2.) QTP or American Racing long tubes with O/R Y and either a magnaflow or gmmg catback(gmmg sounds better but doesn't flow as well).

3.) QTP or American Racing long tubes with custom X setup into a magnaflow.

There are plenty more out there, but if it was me, I'd go with either 1 or 2. I really like the QTP headers atm.
