Default Driving a civic screwed up my stick shift skills

I learned to drive a stick on a srt 4 and drove it for 2 1/2 years with no problems at all...... then i got stupid and wanted to save money and got a new civic which was the worse driving stick shift ever. Thier drive by wire system and serious lack of torque made me have to relearn how to drive a stick. Well needless to say i came to my senses and got another fun car a 02 Z28 m6. While i have all the gears down like second nature taking off from first still isnt smooth. Just wondering how fast do you let off the clutch in first?? i usually release the cluth half way till it grabs while giving it alittle gas then slowly realeasing it all the way which usually causes it to bog slightly. what do i need to do?

I know what you mean, try going from a deisel truck with a 6 speed that you don't give throttle till you are off the clutch to a huge cammed ls1 with a grabby clutch that you have to try and slip the **** out of to keep from bucking.

It's been awhile but I think I used to let the clutch out just till it starts to grab then start getting on the gas and usually had its fully engaged by 1200 rpms. You can practice starting off using no throttle and it should help you get a good feel for the car.

Try driving an auto civic everyday then try to take the camaro to the track! My shifts are good its the startin thats the hard part. I does require practice, and practice means more wear. So I just let my 60's suck.

when I first got the Z28 I bucked it slightly till i figured you just about HAVE to slip it a tad here and there in first or it will jump due to the power. Go to a parking lot and practice for a whole hour nothing but starting off. Get a feel for how slow you have to let the clutch out for it to not buck or bog.

With the manual shift in '99 Z28 and TA's, do you have to apply firm pressure to the left on the gear stick when shifting from 1st to 2nd to get a smooth transition? Could shifting without holding to the left cause the gear to not grip well onto the synchro, resulting in possible grinding from the dog teeth?

no man just shift directly down! and on the t56 the gears are really close to each other so u may miss that 3rd gear a few times in the camaro but when u drive another car it will be totally differnent!

Amen to missing 3rd. I have been driving a 67 nova with a 4 speed and bought a 99 Formula with Heads/cam already done and a centerforce spec 3 clutch a week ago. It took about 20 minutes to get the starts down with the clutch being so different. I kept going 1st, 2nd, 5th. It took me forever to figure out that you just have to shift like your going back to first and it will suck it into 3rd. Still working out the bugs I guess.
