2002 ZL1 recreation - paint is finally done!
My car is finally coming home this weekend after 20 months in the paint shop. I just wanted to share the results, so far.....
The car is a 2002 SS that I bought new in 10/02. It just rolled 9k miles before taking it in for paint. I haven't driven it in 3 years
This will be a ZL1 Phase II recreation. This version had the 475hp LS6 (cam, long tubes, tuning, etc). It will also get the proper decals, badging, brake upgrades, houndstooth leather seat inserts, etc.
I'm hopeful about finishing the project this year...stay tuned.

There are several reasons for the timing. It's a very small volume custom shop. Their primary line of business is restoring original Shelby Mustangs. The project wasn't a huge priority for me (the car has never been a daily driver), and it required tremendous research and planning. I gathered hundreds of pictures of real ZL1's and we enlarged the pictures to ensure that every detail is correct - where the stripes start/end, spacing, shape, lettering, etc.

Coming from Atlanta, and knowing the people that made the Real ZL1's, You've got your work cut out for ya. Good luck on your project, and it looks good....so far. Don't forget to buy the GMMG exhaust. You also will need the proper rear view mirror and GMMG/Berger Decal for your Air lid. If you have any questions about the cars, you can either call Matt Murphy at GMMG or Mike and Ron at Vengeance Racing.
Again, Good Luck.
Again, Good Luck.

Actually you might be surprised at how reasonable this was. The total cost was around $6k. I did a lot of the disassembly (and will do the reassembly) myself. The interior was gutted to bare metal - there is nothing inside. The body shop removed all of the glass and completely disassembled the body. There are no ridges or seams in this paint job. The attention to detail is incredible. The price also includes hand lettering on the hood and rear deck.

The car will get all of the big pieces and the details - LS6 engine, Corvette brake upgrade, ZL1 badges, GMMG badge, air lid decal, Gentex mirror, power antenna, door jamb plaque, billet grille with '69 Camaro bowtie, silver gauge faces with silkscreened ZL1 logo, dash plaque, and numbering. All production #'s will show #70 - what would have happened if production continued for one more vehicle. The intent isn't to fool anyone - it's a tribute car/recreation. The project has been fun, and I can't wait to hit the car shows and streets with it.

I wish it had taken longer...I don't have a place to put it right now, and the flatbed is dropping it off in the morning. It will be an all night thrash to clear adequate garage space.
