Default Pro's and con's of running COgs on the street

Hey guys/the big shops that are out there, i am sure you see cogs on race cars often...what do you think about cogs on the street in a daily drive, 5000km a year...

Car would be and auto 4l80e 3200-3500 stall, YSI,

thanks

I'be leery of running a cog on a conventional lt1, you already have a stressed crank with the opti hanging out the front of the motor.

There have been cases where the snout has been broken off of lt1 cranks running high boost, i don't remember if they where cog or not.

If you pin the crank and have a good forged unit in place, there will be no issues.

Why not just go for a 10 or 12 rib ?

No slip, and no cogs to worry about....

That said, the Aussie's routinely use cogs on their LS1/YSi combos, and appear to have it work for them.

Worst Ive seen for a LT1 was the crank snout got ground down due to not pinning the crank.

Do you have any links to some of these? I'd like to see how they have them set up, I bet its pretty cool looking

Aussies place the blower upper left side of motor...basically a GTO layout.

and same as my own, albeit Im using a custom 12 rib.

very old pic when I was starting...although I switched from cog to ribbed before it ran.

First time I've seen your pix and site, Stevie - love the 4DR project and your numbers. I'll be real happy to get the boost up and start getting anywhere near your numbers. Awesome car and truly low-key.

And your numbers, Schurters LT1, are very impressive as well. I have a 383 smallblock Chevy and am just getting started tuning with the new T-trim (upgraded from an S-trim). I'd be extremely happy getting within 10-15% of your numbers. Fighting with belt slip and perhaps bracketry right now.

Thumbs up to both of you.

If you do try the cog, I'd be real interested in your results and and change in sound.

The opti is driven by the cam, not the crank. The only connection the opti has to the crank is via the timing chain.

The crank cog is from CAPA in Australia. I believe it is just a typical Vortech piece though.
It was an 86T item for a 50mm belt.

At that time, given what I wanted to do, it wasnt suitable with regards to pulleys and available belt sizes ( or lack of belt sizes ). And CAPA were no help whatsoever in this regard.
Problem was I wanted to use the YSi on a stock engine at first. So this did impose limitations.

So I sent the crank pulley to ASP, and they re-cut it for a 12 rib instead, ended up at 8.25"

It mounts to a Powerbond pulley using an adaptor.. Its a direct replacement for stock,, albeit with 6 x 3/8" UNF holes for mounting. I would guess these use the same PCD as an ATI damper.

I wanted a little more, so I then got ASP to make me a 8.5" crank, which I am currently using.
ASP also made me blower pulleys...currently down to 3.0"

For all the cog stuff, CAPA in Australia will have pretty much everything you need, as the Aussie guys regularly use cogs...although not in an F-Body fitment obviously.
