VTEC is the propriatory name of a variable cam timing system developed and used by Honda (also used on Acura since Honda Motorcars owns both).

So while there are no VTEC LS1s, there could very well be variable cam timed LS1 engines. There are several methods of varying the cam timing on a pushrod V8, and while I do not personally know of any being used on the LS1 I have heard of them being used on LT1s and "regular" small block chevrolets.

Yeah, a variable stretch timing chain... ;-) Seriously, the problem with altering cam timing (as opposed to valve timing) on a "normal" SBC is that ignition timing is also altered, since the cam drives the distributor. Variable ratio rockers (www.hotrocker.com) are one way to accomplish the task to a degree, as are the old school Rhodes lifters... not that I have any personal experience, but it all seems like snake oil to me. VTEC works, I guess... but all it really does is extend the rev-range and trades RPM for a *little* bit of power.

What I am waiting for (and it looks like it'll be a long wait) is electromagnetically actuated valves... think about it; the perfect valve timing for any particular engine speed/RPM/load... the possibilities are unreal. Smooth idle, great mileage, and the MONSTER cam we all want for big end power.

I'm pretty sure vtec switches between two different sets of cam lobes, one for low rpms and one for high rpms. It's more than just valve timing. But I think this would be impossible on the ls1 without going to some kind of overhead cam setup.

Your right, it does switch between two different cam lobes, it's very cool stuff if you take one apart and look at how it all works.
