Thumbs down Replaced AIR pump and still making Noise! Help!

Let me start from the beginning. I have a Camaro SS with 66K miles and my AIR pump just gave me problems recently. It started making a weird whistle sound when I would turn on my car and it would go away as soon as the AIR pump would turn off. I decided to get a used, low mile AIR pump and installed it. It gave me no problems at all until yesterday. This "new" pump has like 30K miles I believe and it shouldnt be making this noise.

Now, Im wondering if its my AIR pump that went bad or if its something else in the car.

What do you guys think ? Has it ever happened to anyone here ?

I think most people here just get rid of the system all together

My air system makes the supercharger sound on startup too lol It'll be gone soon enough though. I hear all sorts of ls1 fbodies make the same sound on startup. Dont worry about it.

Its normal.. Air system just seem to make a whistling noise through the exhaust once in a while so replacing it won't change anything. Its probably not the actual pump just somewhere in the system there is a bend, corner, or valve that is just right to cause it. Other than disabling it and reconnecting it later when needed (I know tearing it out won't be an option for you in CA) there is noting you can do that I know of.

And people wonder why I didn't buy a GM truck

My AIR pump squealed like a little bitch starting at about 30k miles, and was worse when it was wet. I just ditched the entire system...it wasn't worth my time or my money to replace it.

Thumbs down

The reason why I want to fix this problem is because my car is currently for sale, I live in California and alot of people out there dont know that its common for the AIR pump to make the noise and well people think the motor is about to go out or other things and it might make my sale even harder.

Could be the check valves themselves in the system; they are located in the manifold, cheap to replace.

You have LTs and still have the air system? Your supposed to put restrictor plates between the headers and the airpipes for this reason. http://riptide63.homestead.com/restrictor.html

Still, you can follow that article as it has the GM part # for the check valves. As the picture shows, unbolt the 2 bolts on each pipe that goes into the manifold, the check valve is under that. Make sure you're doing the AIR connections and not the EGR, they look similiar.

On another note, your signature shows QTP longtubes and y-pipe, that's why we thought you had them.

Cool

Yea I guess I should update it, I had that set up but Im currently selling the car so I need to put everything back to stock.... Well almost everything, as I can keep the GMMG and the Lid.

Let me explain the sound it makes a little more, Its kinda hard to tell or write but when I turn on the car, its starts making a loud noise which comes out o my exhaust tailpipes and its like a tea kettle kinda noise. It then goes away as soon as the AIR pump shuts off and I never hear it again. It only comes on when the AIR pump is on.

Unplug the damn thing and be done with it. The new owner wont know the difference and if he wants he can plug it back it, theres nothing wrong with the system.

Can you shut the pump off with a programmer to stop the SES light?
