Default Gutting cats...will it change my AF mix? Sound?

I found out one of the Random Tech cats on my car is going bad. Rather than buy a new one, I am considering just gutting them.

Will this have any effect on my A/F ratio? Also, I heard a friend say that they did this with an LT1 and it sounded like azz...is this the same on LS1s?

Thanks

It will be louder but it should not change your A/F ratio (it didn't when I gutted my cats). All your doing is removing back pressure so it should just be able to flow more.

what would cause a cat to go bad ?? is this typical with cars equipped with headers ??

I think it may have been installed backwards originally...it came with the SLP long-tubes. They said to put it in with the "numbered sides facing forward," but the fittings were backward on one, so we decided to put it in by the way it fit instead of by the numbers (figured it was a misprint). It most likely went in backwards.

I just figured the easiest thing to to would be to gut the cats out. With OBDII testing in this state, all I need is the APPEARANCE of cats and a pair of sims to fool the computer.

The reason I'm asking about the sound is that a friend of mine gutted an LT1 and said it sounded like *** afterwards.

How much louder should I expect it to be? Also, will losing that back-pressure affect the way it runs?

Thanks.

well, for what's it worth, I've heard a few LS1's with no cats, and they sounded like crap. And this was on stock manifolds. Must be even worse on headers. Unless you like extremely raspy exhaust.

If all you need is appearance of cats, what about
getting some off-road tubes and tack-welding the
shells from some stock cats in the right place?
I think the resonator effect of the empty cat
chambers are what prople dislike (and the airflow
disruption can't be a bonus) but if you have the
smooth tubes and add fake cat "bubbles", it's all
good.

I'm starting to think I might be better off just replacing the cat. Not sure if I'm ready to deal with the noise or trouble.

Does anyone know which Random Tech cats SLP uses with their headers/catalytic Y-pipe? What's the collecter/Y-pipe size?

I'd ask SLP directly, but their website is down.
