Lots of noise through Hurst Billet Plus
I just installed my new Hurst Billet Plus shifter and there is a lot of noise coming up through it. I put a gasket at the base and everything. I've tried it with and without a gasket and it still does it. It works fine, but it's annoying as heck. It seems a little sloppy too, between the lower pivot pins. Anybody else have this problem?

Well, I just bought CobraBob's shifter gaskets. I'll keep you all posted on whether or not that works. It'll take a few days for the gaskets to get here though. I did some research on solutions, and it says some people stuff dynamat around the shifter and underneath the console to muffle the noise. I'm not doing that though.

How many miles are on your T56?? It could also be internal noise from the shift rails/forks/pads when they are worn some, and the clearances open up. Did you put a new delrin "high hat" cup/bushing in the shift rail (where the "ball" on the end of the bottom of the shifter goes) when you installed the shifter?

I just attribute the noise to all those big, strong, gears going 'round in my T56...
I can hear it more as power is applied and less when I let up on the pedal, confirming that the noise is coming from the gears meshing inside the tranny.

I don't know about the OP, but mine only makes noise with the Pro 5.0. If I put the stock shifter back on I can't hear the noise. I've read that the rubber bushing on the stock shifter silences the noice and aftermarket shifters amplify the noise by being solid metal.

I remember looking at it, and it looked fine. Do you think a brand new one would quiet it down some? What is the exact name of this piece so I can ask about it at a dealership? Thanks dailydriver

I can't find anywhere you can get these bushings. I've checked the dealership and they don't list just the bushing. Can anyone redirect me to a link or something?

Try calling Dal (1-877-448-5451) 0r Fred Beans (1-877-385-5769). Tell them you're looking for the plastic/delrin "high hat" bushing for the T56's shift rail where the ball of the shifter goes in. I can't find the number. Any GM parts peeps on here??

You can't get just that bushing, it's part of the offset lever on the top shaft... Part#12523298 includes cup insolator.. There's another bushing I'm showing, but it's for the top shaft on that same lever.. It's part#12523001, but I don't think it's the one you're looking for.

I have a stock m6 shifter and i just added a speedinc short stick, and i started hearing more noises.....but its normal, just goes to show you how good the stock shifter is at muffling normal internal tranny noise 2 bad it sucks for hard shifting.

The T56 is a super quiet transmission. Internally, it is DEAD quiet. It shouldn't be making any noise though the gears or anything. It's not like the old Rock Crusher or Super T-10 Trannys. Now, my '78 with the T-10 makes noise with it's square-cut gearing! Our T56s, however, won't make a sound. The vibration/sound is mostly between the shift rail's plastic pivot cup, sloppiness of the shifer's internals, and the ability of the stick/**** to resonate it all. The two main reasons people start hearing more noise is: 1) Aftermarket sticks don't have the huge insulator at the bottom of the the stick to muffle the noise. 2) Billet aluminum naturally amplifies sound frequencies caused by vibration due to it's much more compact atomic structure, so when aftermarket Billet shifters are installed, the noise is carried up through the shifter.

Ok I just finished putting everything back together. I took apart the entire shifter assembly and rebuilt it using fresh lube and fixed some of the sloppiness. I also replaced the shifter isolator cup "high hat" from Six Speeds Inc. (Sponsor >>>). I bought a silicone gasket from CobraBob and put them in. On top of all that, I modified the lower rubber boot and rubber boot that came with the Hurst shifter so that the one is actually encasing the other (to try and muffle some noise). I also put in a WS6store 6in stick. After all this, is quieted it down some. It is definitely better than what it was before and hardly noticable anymore. I can now only hear noise when accelerating from 1st gear. I used to hear it also when going up hills in higher gear, but not anymore. In conclusion, after a full rebuild, base/stick gaskets, isolator cup, and boot enclosings, the noise is hardly noticable and not nearly as annoying anymore. So, there ARE ways to quiet it down some, but aftermarket Billet shifter still naturally transmit more noise than stock.
