Default How much smoke on start up is normal?

I get a good poof of smoke when I start the car... When ever it sits for longer than an hour or longer.... It's a 2000 Z28 w/ 44k miles. It's never sat for very long.. It did when I was in Germany for two years, but my father drove it occasionally. I don't think it's bad valve seals.

I've got an ORY and LT's too, FWIW. It started doing this after I deleted the cats. Leaking injector? I was going to put a set of 43* injectors on it soon anyway. It's running a little on the rich side b/c of the altitude and the LS6 intake... It was tuned in CT (w/o the LS6 intake and !cats, but tuned W/ the LT's and Catted y.) and I'm at 4300ft here in NM.

I'm not sure of the color.. Blue means oil, white is coolant and black is fuel... It seems to be all three.. It's more like blue and black. The oil consupmtion is minimal at best. I use 10W-30 Mobil 1 and a M1 oil filter. (it's wicked hot here, I like to have a slightly thicker oil seeing as M1 has a tendancy to run a little on the thin side.)

Just curious... Thanx..

Isn't Holloman the base with the F-117s?

I'm no expert, but maybe try pulling the plugs after the engine sits and seeing what they look like, if there is any eveidence of fuel or gas in the cylinders. Sounds like it's not oil or you would know it's missing, and coolant would probably have other symptoms as well as smoke.

hmmm, maybe check the plugs for better idea of what might really be going on. My 01 z28 use to do that (but it has 150k) then i seafoamed it and its ran like a champ ever since. Maybe a good ol motor cleaning is all you need.

Does the smoke linger around for a bit? Thats usually oil. Coolant or excess fuel smoke usually disperses pretty quickly.

^ yeah.. It disperses quickly.. I'm going to try to get a VID of it when I get my camera back. (Buddy's got it)

Fire it up and it'll smoke when it revs up for a second.. Kick the throttle and the puff of smoke will be there and then it's done. Like I said, I noticed it when I deleted my cats. I edited my original post. It'll do it whenever it sits for longer than an hour.

I rteally need new plugs, I've just been too damn lazy to do it.. Gotta get new plug wires too. Damn Taylor's stripped out of the boot on me..

And yeas.. Holloman has the 117 Stealths. F22's comming in a couple years...

Yeah Id guess just condensation in the pipes mixed with no cats and lil rich. Get out there and sniff that puff. Coolant/fuel/oil usually have a different smell.

I've smelt it before.. A little.. Smells a bit like fuel... leaking injector? or is that just residual from shutdown/startup?

With LT's, ORY and no cats you will get a little smoke on startup just from the unrestricted combustion

^ that's what I thought it was.. It doesn't do it any other time, just on startup.

Yeah with pretty much a straight shot from the exhaust ports on the heads to the tail pipes your gonna see a little smoke at start up and prolly when you really hammer down on it. Nothing to worry about.
