Anybody go to Balad Air Base, Iraq
Just curious who goes there or who is going there. I will be going back in october. I heard the attack level has went down from some of my buddies that just got back didn't know if anybody was over there now and knew anything about it. I just got back in April and the attack level was getting mortared everyday sometimes twice a day.

I was there from May-Nov '06. I'm back in the sandbox, but farther south this time. When I was there it was attacked everyday several times a day, but only a few in the living area by DFAC 2. Out in some of the closer areas to the perimeter it was more frequent. On my way here this July we were diverted from Balad while in the air because of the attacks that day. 5 hour trip back to the deed, on a half broke plane.

I spent some time there back in 05 and it got hit all the time too. I loved that base other than the mortors and **** it was chill. My BN was stationed there I wish my platoon got to spend more time there though. No clue how it is there now but the base itself is nice.

I was supposed to be there right now w/ the HORSE and the Army.. But I got pulled off the deployment..
My Structures buddy got a hold of me he said they (******** w/ their mortars) took out half the chow hall after they JUST got done eating there.. and they mortared the building they were working on.
Now that we're talking about other locations... I was at Bagram last year for 8 months.. That place is nice for a giant mine field, not to mention the burn pit and an occasional mortaring. The KBR chow is GREAT! Kandahar Afghanistan is shithole. Camp Beauring (Kuwait) is small and not much there, and decent food)
The Died gets boring and WAY to damn hot! I have to do construction work in that heat! I was there July last year in transit.. FK THAT! We slept all day and stayed up at night to avoid the heat and humidity. We sat in 'Charlie's (RH Hang out in the back corner of CC) and played Playstation, watched movies and sat on the computer all night.

I had a two week stay there in '05 and I agree the food is good. Not to mention there is nothing around for miles.

I haven't been to Balad yet but some of the guys from my shop have, at best I heard they had to set everything up as they started with nothing....never did ask about any of the attacks.
Yup, spent last winter at Bagram, food was pretty good, loved the mountains when the snow fell, we got our first big snow and some of us had a blast on the flightline....yeah we got mortared a few times but nothing big...
This still echos in my head:
ATTENTION ALL BAF PERSONNEL......THE AERIAL GUNNERY RANGE IS NOW HOT....I SAY AGAIN....THE AERIAL GUNNERY RANGE IS NOW HOT.

I'm here now...again. Unfortunately. It has definitely calmed WAY down since last year. The facilities are improving at a rediculous rate. All in all a much better place than it was. By the way, watch the COMSEC guys. No need to post if they hit or where they hit. People dig for that kinda **** and it could make my tour or yours for that matter, much more hazardous.

I'm thinking about going back over there and working on the MRAP program we're getting in on. I was there the summer of '04 and we got hammered all the time, some WAY too close for comfort. We're starting 1 yr rotations over there, and $200K a year is sounding pretty nice at the moment. From some pics our Colonel showed this morning it's alot nicer than the accomodations we had back then, so I might end up back there pretty soon
