Default Stock LS1 exhaust mods

I've got a stock LS1 dual-outlet exhaust system on my car with no tips (it came like that from the factory). It's got a small hole in the muffler (smaller than a dime, but with a larger area of rust around it), so I'm considering patching that up, cleaning and scuffing anything else, and painting the whole thing hi-temp black. Have any of you guys done no tips + black?

On a side note, have any of YOU tried the "poor mans Borla" mod for the stock exhaust? I'm looking for a different sound - not too concerned about power adding.

61 views, no comments/thoughts? :\ I'm in the (slow) process of sanding down/polishing the outlets. I don't care if it starts to rust - I can sand it again and just paint it with high temp paint. I also read somewhere that it's stainless, but it sure looks like plain ole steel. Will upload progress pics when I get back from work. When it's done, it should look like it's [lightly] brushed and [lightly] polished.

Worst-case scenario is I have to get a better exhaust.

Edit: Uploaded "progress" pics (I don't have a shop or private garage to work in - gimme a break ). I'm wondering how long it'll take before I see evidence of rust. Here's to Southern California weather!

Before (drivers side... passenger side was the same)

After "agressive" hand polish (drivers side)

After some sanding + hand polish (passenger side)
