Default Transmission issue

A friend of mine has a 97 Z28 A4. Coming home from work the other day his trans would not shift into 3rd and 4th gears, but 1 and 2 still worked.

When the gear selector is on "D", the car will shift fine through 1 and 2, but when it hits 3, it just revs like its in neutral. Same as 4th. There was one time, however, that I felt the car try to "catch" in 3rd gear, but that's it.

Anyone know what could cause just these 2 gears to go out? Thanks in advance for all replies.

Could be the 3-4 shift solenoid, or worse, the 3-4 clutches.

Sounds like the clutches are gone in the 3-4 set. Time for a rebuild, thats why i only go MANUAL, that way it is only 1 clutch and i have no problem replacing it myself.

I would spend the few bucks on the solenoid before going all out on the whole trans. (Few bucks is compared to the price of a rebuild, I'm sure it's still not cheap)

most likely it your clutches, my father has a transmission shop and on the 4l60's the 3, 4 clutches and inner sprack are always the first to go
