Default Gauges Question

I dont know if this is the right place to post this, so if not mods please move to the correct location

But i am thinking on a gauge pod, the question is do i want a 2 pillar or 3 pillar?

Also i am an M6 car so here is what i may be thinking

i know i want a water temp gauge and prolly oil temp gauge.. Heres the thing, why do people run an oil temp gauge? And i was maybe thinking an A:F gauge..


thoght or opinions????

A/F gauge as in a lightshow gauge? I wouldn't bother, but that's just me. If you're gonna get an A/F gauge I would get one that has a wideband behind it. I am doing gauges shortly myself, I'm gonna do oil temp, oil pressure, and leave one open for either nitrous pressure in the future or fuel pressure. I would get a pod with how ever many gauges you are going to use. I would get a 3 pod and if you really don't see yourself using the 3rd, just trade with someone who has a 2 pod or sell and offset the cost. This is all my opinion.

A/F gauge is pointless without a wideband IMO.Oil temp maybe but still useless 2 me.Do u ever plan on nitrous??? if so how about nitrous guage and fuel PSI???

Nope do not plan on nitrous.

Wideband O2 and fuel pressure. If you are going with a triple pod add oil pressure or water temp.

Like stated above, a narrow band O2 gauge is a light show and waste of money, IMHO.

Water temp is a certainty. Fuel pressure is only good if you are running FI, not really necessary on an NA motor. Wideband O2 sensor is always good. Oil pressure is good to know as well. A/F meters aren't really useful. At most they are good for comparing before and afters, but they don't offer any quantitative information, light shows as mentioned, and annoying as hell when driving at night.

As stated above the A/F is a waste unless you have a wideband hooked up to it...I also think the water temp is a waste since we already have one...

I would go Tranny temp, oil temp, and fuel pressure...
I will be mounting the bottle on the tunnel mount so I can just turn around to check out the nitrous PSI...I was reading that some of the elec. nitrous gauges are a little off compared to the gauge mounted on the bottle...Just my .02

The water temp gauge on the dash is a dummy gauge(unless you own an 98), it reads a little under 210 when the water temp is actually in range from 180-240. It will only rise higher if the engine is seriosuly overheating. Tranny temp isn't necessary for an M6. It takes 20+ miles of driving for the temp to go above 100. This results in a pretty boring and useless gauge. Fuel pressure, although essential for an FI car(drop in fuel pressure = kablamo!), it is not for an NA car. The chances of maxing out the stock fuel pump on an NA stock cube motor is small. Also, these gauges are very costly. Money is better spend elsewhere.

I personally run a wideband O2 gauge (Innovate XD-16) and a fuel pressure gauge. My fuel pressure drops like a **** at WOT (down to at least 52 psi from 58 at idle), and I'd never know that any other way. Water temp would be pretty much useless to me, and why I don't have one.

Water temp gauge is a necessity, the gauge on a 99+ model is a DUMMY gauge, the only real one is 96-98 i believe.

Tranny temp is worhtless, i am an M6 car.

Fuel pressure, i might get that, but i am N/A not plans in the future for Nitrous. I am cammed and thats it.

A:F, ok i did not know that there was a difference. What does a wideband 02 do? I did not know they make one. I think i have seen that gauge, is that the one that is a digital read out and tells meters the lean/rich???

Oil temp????

Oil Pressure, our gauge is real???

Wideband 02 is an air/fuel measurement tool that has a separate bung/sensor. Very very useful when tuning or even making sure something isn't drastically amiss. XD16 is a nice setup, and comes with a wideband sensor if you so choose that route. Info on the XD16: http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/xd16.php

The wideband gauges usually give a number readout on the gauge itself, and in the XD16 case, both a lightshow and a number.

Wideband meters give you an actual number of air to fuel ratio, or a "lambda" value which is based on stoichiometry. The A/F gauges from Autometer only have little lights that flash around from lean to rich, they don't provide any quantitative values. These gauges also work off of your stock O2 sensor. Wideband gauges use their own O2 sensor, welded in the exhaust pipe. Check out Innovate's site for widebands. The only downside of them is their price. The Autometer gauges are like $50-$60, while widebands are hundreds of dollars.

I did not know this...Did a little research and found this..."Chevrolet changed to a single output sender that only sends the temperature to the PCM; the instrument cluster receives its version of engine water temperature via serial data from the PCM. Some aspect of this new setup causes the temperature gauge to read 210° F for the entire 180-226° F range."..

Interesting none the less...Looks like water temp is a good gauge to install...

I have an Aeroforce scan gauge which you could choose whatever you would like to measure with the exception of oil pressure and im not sure about oil temp. Its pricey but to me its well worth it. Im saving up for a wideband

I have a 2 gauge pod with Autometer wideband A/F and Nitrous pressure. The Autometer A/F has the lambda graph and a numeric value. I find it very useful, however it was about 400 bucks but thats cheaper than a new bottom end!
