Corvette Performance - Brakes
I currently have a 98 c5 stock, and I have very squeaky brakes. I went for an inspection, and they said the brakes were fine. When i hit the brakes, it only squeaks at low speeds and light braking. When I slam the brakes pretty hard, they dont squeak. Anyone have any idea of how to rectify this situation? I tried brake cleaner, to no avail. I thought maybe its glazed pads, but maybe im missing something? thanks

Sounds like you need new pads. If the brakes are squeaky and they where inspected, go to a different shop. 9 times out of 10 when the brakes are squeaky, you need new pads.

Ok, how many miles are on the car? Was there ever a brake job done on the vehicle before? Depending on those answers I would have additionaly questions to help narrow down if it is a true need for a brake job, or if the pad selection is what is causing the squeak.
there are 55,000 miles on the car, I'm not sure if it's had a brake job or no, the owner before me was very good on keeping up-to-date with repairs, but maybe there never was one done.

If that is the case I would suggest doing one. My Z06 required a brake job at around 50,000 miles.
ok cool i'll check into that. What exactly does a brake job entail?

Well, the main part of it is replacing the brake pads on all the calipers. Then you would want to take off your rotors and either have them turned at a local parts store or change them with new rotors. Additionally, I would look at the brake fluid and check its color because it may be time to change that as well. As for brake parts I recently did the ones on my Z06 and had the old rotors turned for 10 dollars each at a local O'Reilly's. I purchased some HAWK HPS pads from Thunder racing ( http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog/?action=vshop&vid=7&pcid=32 ). I know NAPA sells rotors for around 20-30 dollars each if you would like new ones. If you have an email address I have a write up I can send you on changing the brakes.

I changed the pads on my car a few weeks ago with some high end pads and the squeaked BAD. I read a few forums and I was told to take the pads back off and put a coat of RTV on the back side of them and let it dry over night then reinstall. The RTV keeps the pads from vibrating and squeaking....it worked great for me and only cost $5.00
