Default TH350 Converter Brand Selection

I need to switch converters. I am currently using LS2Formula's old 8" and am having, what appears to be, pretty much the same problem of blowing thru it. The current converter is on loan to me and if it worked, I could buy it. It is a Cohen which I am told is one of the good ones. I could send it back and have it restalled for $500 but then I still would have to pay Steve on top of that. Basically would put me at $1000 which is the price of a new one.

So, I dont know much about converters.

I am looking for some pros and cons of the different brands. Seems that there is a pretty big spread in price. I cant really afford the best of the best. This is not a race car. I drive the car alot. I am thinking of going to a 9 or 10in, if that makes a difference. Race weight is 3700 with me in it. Using 550 fwhp NA + 250 fwhp worth of spray as the power numbers. Looking to be aroud 4200 stall on motor and 5200 on spray with a 7K RPM shift point on a 3.73 gear and 28" tire. It's the LS2 408 car pictured below.

Also, I have the TCI SFI Flywheel which I believe will accept none LS1 converters.

Thanks guys!

I'm not really looking for a list of people that are happy with their respective converters. I am more trying to determine what makes one worth $500 and another one worth $1000. Why would I pay twice as much for Brand A as I would for Brand X?

Well what makes converters worth more is on the inside..and out also.

What converter were you using? What type of car is it? Track street both?

Honestly i think B&M (Owned by Mcloed now) Makes the best street converters. They have been around along time and i trust there quality.

Get a ATI Treemaster MRT. You wont regret it. I just went to a Th350 and got an ATI and cant wait to go to the track. All the fastest N/A A3 cars run em.

skip B&M on their converters, they're cheap junk. I've run a TCI 10" 3600 stall in my camaro for 2 years now with no issues, but not spraying on this motor. If you want a high quality one then, COAN, yank, vigilante, etc would be good choices but expensive.

I have a Coan 8" 4500 right now that I borrowed from a friend that was running a similar setup (about 100 hp more than me but almost 200 lbs lighter). I figured that the power and weight difference would offset each other. It appears that I am blowing right thru the converter on spray.

I have already ordered another converter. It is made by a company called FTI out of Deland Florida. It seems to be a lot of bang for the buck and I know a guy that was running 9.21 @ 148.7 on one and many of locals swear by them apparently. I'll post some results.

My best on the current setup was 10.86 @ 125.5 on motor w/ 4.10 gears and 10.56 @ 135.5 with 3.73's and a 200 shot. The ET sucked mostly cuase I couldnt get a decent short time but I am missing about 4-5 MPH.

l don't know if l will be in trouble but to get a custom torque converter for your car. you should talk to someone that will look at your dyno sheet along with your car data. the only one l know is marv at A-1 in canoga park, ca.

B&M= But thats just my opinion I guess. It's a shame because from what I've been told they invented the high stall converter, but IMO thats about all they did good.

I would need to either put in a manual tranny in order to dyno actual rwhp (without converter slip) or pull the engine and put it on an engine dyno. My dyno sheet is useless as it just shows that the converter is slipping badly on the spray. See spray vs motor below.

Only picking up 135 on a 200 shot and the hp curve is more like a flat line.

I got all my baseline data w/ and without spray. I have HPTuners logs. And I have 4 time slips w/ and w/o the spray. If I can get the converter in by next Friday and the weather holds up, I'll go to the track and gather some data to post up. I will not make any other changes. Should be a solid head to head comparison. This is a $1200 Coan that I am running now and it seems to be working great on motor but not on spray.
