Default STS Turbo and Severe BUCKING under boost!

My friend has an 01 SS and he installed a 8psi STS turbo kit and is having bad problems with it. When the car starts to make boost about 3000rpm it starts bucking uncontrollably. It is really bad! He thinks it is the tune, he used a diablo on it with their tune but i think it is more mechanical. I think the waste gate or blowoff valve is malfuntioning. Any ideas?

Do you have exhaust coming out of the WG (is it black around the hole)?

Is this bucking while driving or in park or neutral!

In the tune they use, you can bounce it off 3000rpm's while in park or netural and each bounce makes 1 psi of boost...

This is so you can crack your blow off valve at car shows and such..

KINDA gay in my opinion, but hey... To each his own!

Sounds like it could be a really lean air fuel condtion , get it on the dyno and have it tuned before it goes boom !

I dont know what he has done as far as tuning with his diablo but i have hptuners and i will try to scan it for him and see what the car is doing. I was not sure if it was the tune or mechanical because it is really bad it feels like he is pumping the gas peddle. Is there anything in particular that can help the tune?

The port of the waste gate is pretty sooty. It does have alot of soot on it to be so new.

He said it does not do it in neutral but i know it does when he drives it.

Humm..... The Tune they provided should be PLENTY to suffice for 8psi!!!

I would def. get it on a dyno and see whats going on.....

Get you HP tuners out and see what kinda timing its running under boost, and see what kinda fuel you are getting under boost!

Does he have a Wideband? If he does, whats it reading under Boost?

Has he been driving it in the rain?

Did this problem start from Day one of kit installation, or did it just start out of the blue?

Make sure he checks ALL of his silicone and clamps and make sure they are all tight and air isnt leaking in from somewhere on the charge pipes.......

If all of this checks out, call me tommorow AM and I will get my STS rep on the phone and well get it figured out for you!

This has been going on since he installed it and he has called STS and they did not help, then he asked me but i have never delt with boost i only build NA engines.

He does not have a wideband but i told him it would be a great investment.

His boost guage reads vacum at low speed then hovers around 7-8 psi when it starts bucking and i dont hear the waste gate until he lets off the gas. His diablo is reading about 14psi but i dont know about that thing.

He has a parts shop and he will be there tuesday so i will check with him again this week. He is about fed up with it.

It does sound like the tune is off. BTW, pig rich will cause the car to buck like that too. That was my initla prob when I installed a STS on my car. PE table was set stupid low....9.0 to 1 A/F. Once the A/F was unscrewed, the bucking problem was solved.

My $0.02 is to drive it easy (or not at all) till a Wideband and scaner are hooked up to the car. Also, if there is a leak/disconnected silicone coupler, that will also end up with the car running pig rich and doing the same thing. Had that happen once too (the inlet pipe popped of the throttle body when driving one day)

Got it figured out! It was the park/neutral rev limiter. The car thinks it is in neutral when he is driving. He raised that rev limiter and fixed the problem. Just in case anybody else has that problem.
