Default gas gauge acting weird

ok, so the gas gauge worked fine when I got the car. then I had the fuel pump swapped out with one from a 94 Z28 and now the gauge reads empty when the car is running. So i figure the sender was damaged during the pump swap. But then today I was working on some other stuff with the car off and the gauge is reading correctly So I turn on the ignition to see if it was just stuck and it dies again. then I look again with the car off and its reading correctly....WTF? Somethings gotta be backwards. Im going to check the connectors when I get some more time but any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

your hood is facing the wrong way.

I mean, have you tried shaking the wiring harness to the cluster or the wires to the fuel tank. maybe something is loose?

All I know is that i NEVER trust the fuel gauges on fbodies, i ran out of gas on a supposed 1/4 tank on my old formula.

LOL!! I ran out of fuel on my 92 camaro at 1/4 tank also! I tried shaking it and no go. still the same. Im going to check it with my autometer fuel gauge and if THAT reads bad then its my sender.

its probably the sender. they are garbage. the only fuel gauge thats ever accurate for me is the one in my 1979 olds toronado. that thing is pinpoint accurate

The tanks are kinda v shaped thats why you have less gas in the bottom than the top. Half tank is about 1/4, also theres one wire from the sending unit to the factory gauge with one connection in between thats located behind the left rear seat from the inside of the car or the same location under the car.

My car runs out at 1/4 tank, must be the sending unit on the pump, or either an electrical relay problem or something I don't know much about...

Yup, I think its the sender. Im just going to have to keep a really close eye on the gas for now until I am ready to take the tank off again. Thanks for all the suggestions guys

I wish, this car is such a mutt. The speedo and odo. are not working properly b/c I have a t5 not a t56 . The computer is not reading the signal properly or maybe its just not compatible. Im going to eventually get an electric speedometer so I can keep an eye on my speed.

because I bought the car as a roller and I put in the motor I was going to use in my third gen. So I have a Gen 1 carburated small block instead of an LT1.
