i have put a carb intake on a 5.3.i will not be using any of the factory harness. i need to know which wire on the alternator plug and the size of resistor to use.

term "b", goes to a resistor, anything between 70-250 ohm. it should be at least 3 watt. Questions, give me a call. Steve 909 910 3867

Theres a link in the FAQ sticky, and it depends on the year but...
99-00 Terminal B needs to be connected to IGN power through a resistance source (can be a resistor or light bulb). Wire terminal B to one side of a 470 ohm 1/2 watt resistor and wire the other side to a wire that is hot(+12v) when the ignition switch is in the run position. Or use a light bulb (usually a 194) instead of the resistor. If you use a light bulb it will act like the generator light in a older car.

01-?? See above for terminal B, and these also require a second wire. Hook terminal C to a +12V IGN source (ie the same wire you used for termial B, but terminal C needs to be hooked directly to it, don`t put a resistor or light in line.

On some 2003 and newer 5.3L`s I heard that they have started using 3 wires, but I can`t remember what the 3rd one is for or how to hook it up.

Would a 500 OHM 5W resistor work? I don't have a clue how stuff like this works and I'd hate to mess something up.

haven't used that high a resistor. give it a try, it won't hurt anything, just won't work.
the resistance does two things in this circut.
1,it turnes on the regulator to charge.
2 , when the key is on, but engine not spinning, regulator inside alt. grounds out. if resistor is not in circut, you will burn up regulator,. questions give me a call, steve 909 910 3867

I know that a 500 ohm resistor will work, but I don`t know if a 5w resistor would work. I don`t know what difference the watt rating of a resistor makes. The 470 ohm resistors are readily available at radioshack. Theres a link in post 31 https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ght=alternator

A 500 ohm, 5 watt resistor will work fine, it's just WAY more wattage than needed. Anything in the 470 - 680 ohm range, 1/2 - 1 watt is all that's needed. A 5 watt is just overkill and is a more expensive resistor, but if you have one laying around it will work perfectly.

I kow this is an old thread but I have a q related to this. I have an 04, 5.3 going in a 65 Vette. I've tried to keep as much of the modern features as possible. In this case I'm using the battery control module. The alternator wiring connects to this module. I'm taking a leap here by assuming I won't need a resestor in my wiring? Any input?

I'm not really sure. You should probably PM one of the guys that posted up answers here. Maybe you could just wire in the light bulb just to be safe(like G-Body mentioned).

I hooked my terminal b to my idiot (engine) light on my 68 camaro, is that enough resistance or do I still have to put a 470 ohm resistor in line?
