Thinking about buying a T/A, question..
So im looking to pick up an 02 trans am within the next month and the only thing im undecided on is what type of tranny to go with. Ive owned a stick car once in my life for a few weeks and to be honest im not the best driver. Id personally perfer auto, but i dont know very much about the transmissions in theese cars so please guys, enlighten me.
What are the pros/cons of each? what would you reccomend? any advice in general?
thx

I have had 3 F-body's, my first two were Auto's and the one I currently own (00 TA WS6). The auto's were carefree to drive, but not near as fun. Yeah, it takes a good while to get the shifting down, but once you do, you will much happier with a manual. I vote the 6 speed!

Depends on what you wanna do with this car. For just light driving and cruising I would go with a 6 speed. For racing and DD duties I would go with an A4 for two reasons. One, stop and go traffic can get tiring with a 6 speed. Two, an A4 is faster for racing purposes.

Both tranny's are decent mechanically, so go with what you prefer as said above.

Before you decide, try out a 6 speed for an extended test drive to see If you feel you are happy shifting. This is a lot of money to spend to get something your not happy with. Trust your own instincts, not someone else's opinion.

My $.02. The six speed in my TA is easiest to drive of other manual cars I've owned. It is very mild mannered and a lot of fun. I agree that you need to make your own decision, maybe find someone to let you drive theirs prior to buying. My '97 TA was an auto and was a blast to hold the brake and lite um up. Don't be afraid of the six speed - try before you buy.

6 speed is much more fun. Auto is much more convenient. I prefer my 6 speed with the 4.10's, I can start in 2nd from a dead stop like it was first gear in a 3.42 car and I can skip gears all day long. 2-4-6 if I want to be lazy. My point is, just because its a 6-speed doesnt mean you will be shifting your arm off, even with a 3.42 you can keep it in the odd gears and go 1-3-5. Once you get the shifting down you will love it. But again, go with what YOU prefer.

Trans for Trans the m6 is a better built trans.. It is much harder to brake compared to the a4..( you can look this up) i drive a 98 m6 TA and love it.. Hands down the m6 is faster stock but if you BUILD up the auto it can be faster and alot easier to race.( dont have to wory about missing gears and so on.. But its all on what you prefer they equal out IMO...

the M6 is stronger for sure. In M6 cars you break other parts of the car with the power (like the rear end) and the trans usually holds up. In an A4 the trans will usually bust before it breaks any parts of the car. Stock that is.

Personally id go with the 6 speed. I had a 04 gto which was an auto, it lasted 4 months before i got rid of it. Great car but the tranny just made it so boring to drive. I have a 02 z28 m6 now and couldnt be happier.

i love my a4, just because it's my daily driver. after several trips to gatlinburg, Tn and panama city beach, i realized how awesome it was not having to ride a clutch while sitting in traffic for hours.

I love the six speed in mine, I was thinking about buying an auto but after driving both it was no contest. Nothing wrong with an auto car, especially if you plan to do a lot of drag racing with it, but I think a six speed is just that much more fun.

You resurrected this thread to make this ignorant comment? Grow up.
It would probably help a lot of people to change thier minds about autos if they could test drive a 3500+ stalled LS1. Especially if the test drive was at a quarter mile track
I try to hit the track once or twice a month and there is no way I would trade in my auto for an M6 now. I'm too addicted to 1.6X 60's and beating almost everyone I race.
It sounds to me that you really want an auto but are afraid you'll be sacrificing power. Just put a stall and tranny cooler in and you'll most likely never regret your decision.
