Whack the retainer with a hammer. The locks get stuck to the retainer. Need to "break" them loose. Don't FU the valve tip.

Like bwana said compress the spring just a bit, enough so that you see spring compress alittle. Check the locks, if they have moved off a bit keep compressing the spring. If you see they are stuck and pushing the valve open, just tap the retainer a bit, and compress some more. Keep doing that until they slip off, last thing you want is compressing them all the way and tapping it and locks flying at your face. Just wear eye protection for safe measures.

**To be honest changing the springs while doing my cam swap was my favorite part. The Crane Cams tool worked 100x better than expected, made everything so easy.**

I agree, changing the springs was also kinda fun for me. I'm not very handy with most of these jobs, my friend helped me do the 'hard' stuff, like swapping out the cam.

But when it came time for the valvesprings, he set me up, showed me what & how to do it. After we did the 1st pair together on cyl#1, he was more than happy to go home for the night, while I did the other 7 cylinders myself!

I used Tim's Tool to remove and add dual springs to my LS6 heads and they were off the car. Great tool.

Machine shops use this

Call up a local place and see what they charge to do it. With the right tools it will only take 30 mins max.

DONT HIT THE VALVE~
With the heads off, you don"t have to hit the valve tip!
Just flip the head over and push the valve back into the head!

Or pack the chamber with a rag, to keep the valve from dropping when you use the tool to compress the springs!

I set the head on a work bench, with a soft sheet or towel under the gasket surface so it won't get scratched, and then put a small sock or piece of towel in the combustion chamber I am working on. As the valve springs compress the valves will hit the sock and stop moving allowing the spring to compress so you can remove the locks. It should be much easier on the work bench, at least you are not leaning over the car for a long time.
