Default Now i think my bottom end is blown. Bad knock/Scretching

Original Link

my cam dowel came off the cam sproket while i was racing. and the motor shut off i pulled the heads and replaced them with some 241's and put my good springs on there. re tightened my 3 bolts going on my cam gear sproket. When i pulled my drain plug there was metal shavings along with the cam dowel. So i went ahead and did all that.
Once everything was together i started it and got this loud scretching/knock/taping noise. im assumin i spun a bearing or something along the line with the bottom end.
im so frustrated beyond beleif ive been working on my car for the last 3 days to come to the end of this...

tomorrow morning my car will be towed to a shop to have a new motor built.

same here, if you have the tools and know how to do a cam/heads swap why not just rebuild the motor yourself? it'll save you lots of sheckles

Yeah the bottom end is toast, pull it out and take that block to the machine shop and have then bore the cylinders for 347CI and get a line hone. Then put that bitch back together with new forged pistons and rods ect...

told you so =p

If you got 241's I say trash the block and go lsx. Now's the time to go big cubes if you're ever planning on doing it in the future! Once you got a freash 347 with 0 miles, you'll never wanna do it!

big cubes or go home!

I figured this was comming. It wasn't sounding too good in the other threads.

At least now you'll have a fresh start though & a motor put together by a shop with a warranty. I'm really suprised it lasted you as long as it did spinning to 6800 RPM.

If you are tight on cash, get a stock piston and rod etc and put it back together...you seem like a faily competent mechanic and could handle it more than likely.

If you want a bad *** bottom end...do you want a forged crank or retain stock crank to save some cash?

the bigger the stroke the more stress you put on the crank by "revving the ****" out of it lol.

If you remember TINKRD's old set up, stock crank, forged rods and pistons etc...was spraying 300 on top of it...that enough spray?

If I were you I'd either rebuild it to stock or just put rods and pistons in it and worry about spraying and your fuel system later when you have the cash to do it right the first time.

Well to me I would never go stock cubes unless I couldn't afford it. In this situation, bigger is always better! I would atleast go 383, just the name sounds cool.

we told you this before and you did not listen. You had piston to head contact, the only way this can happen is if something was wrong with the bottom end.

A nice cheap way would be to buy some forged rods and pistons. Then some Clevite bearings and use the stock crank. Make sure and get some dished pistons for the whopper stick of a cam you have . That right there is actually very affordable at less than 2Gs

I love my iron 408. Its iron so its heavier, but I don't have to worry about it because it's strong as hell. It's setup for spray too, so its good to have as much strength down there as you can get. Its like wearing a cup in baseball. You could probably play a whole season of games without one, but if you get hit in the sack, you'll be cursing yourself for not wearing one as you roll around amongst the grass and dirt holding your crotch. I say build it strong, and then forget about it stock cubes or not. Then you can **** on it as much as you'd like.

If you want a cheaper route either get a forged 347 from a vendor on here or have your motor rebuilt with forged pistons & some Callies rods w/ARP bolts. Thats the cheapest route you could possibly take.

I wouldn't waste money on a forged crank since the stocker is good up to like 800hp.

Hey, if you are still pissed off, do not make any decisions yet. Just take the time to cool off and then think about what you want. You will come out of this with a lighter wallet but also a much stronger setup. Good luck.

The stock cranks are more than enough for n/a applications. However in your situation you will probably want to get your's checked out before using it. That sucks huge amount of ***** and I can only hope that I dont have to be in your situation anytime soon.

check and see if the valves arent bent. if you broke the cam dowell off then its most likely that the timing was thrown off and the valves kissed the pistons. before you start going crazy..check the valves, even pull the heads to be suyre.

If the car isn't your main transportation just call it a year and save, save, save over the winter and build what you want. I'd say a 408 would fit nicely. Order it around Feb and have it for spring.
