1 piece vs 2 piece seals and seats
I am going to replace the seals on my 99 LS1 motor due to oil consumption. I am noticing that there are two types of oil seals avaiable the older ones are a separate seat and oil seal. The newer LS1's have a one piece seal and seat. Can you interchange the two? I have 853 casting number heads. Also can you change the seats from the top without removing the heads?

I have never replaced seals with the heads still on the motor, but I can't see why not. Sounds like a pain in the ***!
It's better to use that 2 pc seal so that you can shim for the installed height without worrying about raising the seal too far off the top of the guide. Unless you're not worried about the installed height...

Im using Comp Cams 918 Springs with 772 titanium retainers. I also have a Lunati 5007 road race cam 230/237 I belive that road racing this setup has hurt the seals.

I did some research and found the 2 piece seat thickness is .035 and the 1 piece seat is .045 therefore I need to assune .010 increase in seat height if I change from the 2 piece to the 1 piece. Kind of like using a .010 shim.
