Default Automatic Question

I have a 1999 trans am with an A4 transmission and 3.23 gears. Driving in "D" my car shifts fine but when I try to use 1,2,3 my car will shift from 1st to 2nd but not 2nd to 3rd. I have to skip 3rd and go to drive. Is this odd or is something going very wrong? Thanks for any help!

Why are you shifting manually? Let the PCM shift the car.

Like I said, I wanted to know if there is something wrong with my transmission and if I'll have to fix it. It's just something I noticed when I first bought my car and I was testing everything out.

Is something wrong with your transmission..... yea its an automatic. just kidding its probaly best for the tranny to let the pcm do the shifting. As for if anything is broken ive owned 2 4l60e cars and i never had a problem putting it into anyone of the gears so something might be up.

Just leave it in drive or overdrive.

Something is wrong. While it is not recommended to shift a 4L60E yourself, it should still be doable. I know I have gone 1-2-3-4 on many occasions without any issues.

I would have the tranny looked at. Even though it's not messing with D and OD now it could very in the near future.

Good Luck

Nothing is wrong. The pcm won't allow an upshift until the programmed speed & rpm are reached for the current throttle position, regardless of gear selector position....meaning you could drive around in 2nd and manually shift it into 3rd, but the actual upshift will not occur until the requisite parameters are met. Leave the shifter alone unless you have a manual valvebody.

so i have one person telling me something's wrong and another telling me the opposite...i'm pretty sure if my car was waiting for the parameters to be met it would have shifted b/c in 2nd it can be taken all the way to redline (prob. past it if i tried) and still wont shift when i put it in 3rd. i already said it was something i TRIED OUT WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. i know you shouldnt shift manually in an automatic, so i dont need to be told not to on every post. i'm not 5.

Like I said, there is a delay when you try to manually shift a computer controlled transmission. What you're describing is normal. It will not immediately shift into the next gear just because you moved the gear selector, even if you're WOT at the rev limiter. Not trying to be a dick bud, don't get so wound up. If your car shifts correctly with the selector in Drive, your trans just is fine.

If it's shifting fine in D, just leave it be. If you put it in 3rd and take off from a stop will it shift up to 3rd normally?

If the answer is yes to that question then you're fine and stop dicking around with shifting it at different speeds

I race shifting mine manually and all I have is a converter and shift kit, mine changes faster and harder shifting my self. Is 3.23 your stock gear or did it have a 2.73 in it? Have you changed the tire or rim size? Next time you try to take it to 3rd manually let off the gas real quick and then back on it as you change. Other wise something is wrong with it
