Default Why does my car drive smoother with the AC on?

I've noticed that when my AC is on there is much less cam surging and bucking at low rpms. When it's off, the cam surging and bucking will take over if I'm cruising city streets and the RPMs fall and get close to 1500 or below. What does the AC being on have to do with driveability? And what causes the bucking and clunking sound from cam surge? I'm sure those parts are worn by now.

Typically it idles higher with a/c on, which may make it seem smoother.

If you are getting cam surge/bucking with a T2, you either need to get a tune, or if you have one, have it fixed.

so auto's with cams can avoid cam surge with a tune? i've heard otherwise and vice versa over and over. seems like it's harder for autos to idle than standards.

Absolutely. A good tuner can make your cammed car have excellent manners. In my opinion, installing a cam is only half of the battle...the tune is a really important part of it too.
