View Full Version : How quick can you go on 26" slicks before they just won't hold?

I've been running 28" slicks on some stock 16" salad shooters since Vengeance did my H/C install for me. I've got some 15 x 9.75 Welded RT Bogarts that are waaaaaaay lighter so I want to go back with them. They're 4th gen F-Body specific with the 7/8" spacer welded onto the inside for added brake caliper clearance. Problem: 28" slicks scrape the outer fender when the back end squats on the launch. They stick out too far. The outside of the tire is even with the outer fender. It's probably because the car is lowered but whatever the reason, the 28's are just too big right now when mounted on the Bogarts. Sooooooo....I'm considering going back to some 26" slicks temporarily until I get the money to mini tub this car or whatever it takes to make clearance for the bigger tires. How quick can I expect the 26's to be able to go and still hold? Since I'm changing out the rear gear from 3.90's to 4.56's, switching from the Eaton posi to a full spool, adding a race electric water pump, a carbon fiber driveshaft and ditching the power steering I'm expecting to hit the tires pretty hard now. Any chance the 26's will be good for some high 1.3 60's and some 6.60's @ 103 or so in the 1/8th that the car should now be capable of? Anybody run that quick on 26's? Just wondering before wating a bunch of money on some 26" slicks again. Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me some insight here.

I went 6.90s in the 1/8 with 26" MT slicks. If you stuck with a 4.10 gear and a 26" tire, you would be better off.

There are two 26 x 8.5" tire classes out there that I know about. OVOS at Ohio Valley and OSCA at Hardisburg. Both classes have cars in the 5.70's in the 1/8.

there is a class around here that runs 26x10s they have went 5.20s maybe quicker

Your car must be pretty darn low, Pinkenstein runs 28x10.5's on Floyd RT Bogarts and has zero clearance issues.

Ive went 10.7's with a 1.40 60' on a set of ported 853's and a 218/222 cam with a 75 wetshot. Dumping the clutch at 5000 and having the nitrous turn on at 3000rpm and WOT.

I think they 26's are good for some fast times.

With 4.56's and a 26" tire, don't expect to make many 1/4 passes. With 4.11's and a 26" tire you will be at 7000rpm at 128mph. With 4.56 at 7000 you will only be at 119mph. And that is if you have NO converter slipage.

Im running 4.56's and a 28" and running out of gear at 7200rpm with 131.5mph.

If you never plan on making a 1/4 pass then 4.56's are a good choise. Maybe even not enough gear. But if you are going to run 1/4mile I would get 4:11's and a 26" tire.

Yes John, it's lowered a couple of inches. Also, the rear springs are soft so it squats quite a bit on the launch. I'm going to keep a set of 28 x 10 QTP's on the salad shooters for when I go to a 1/4 mile. Honestly, that's only once or twice a year. I have no converter slippage as I lock the converter at the 1/8th mile mark for a little extra oomph out the end. 7000 RPM should get me right at 130 MPH figuring in .5" for tire growth at 130 MPH. Rev limiter is set at 7200 so I've got a teeny bit of RPM room to grow if need be. I don't expect to trap over 130 with just TFK LS6 heads and a Vindicator cam. Might fool me but, if so, I'll gladly drop back to 4.30 or even 4.10 gears. I'd like to have to do that. :D

On the gear selection, I already had the 4.56's as that's what was in the big tire Firebird when I bought it. I switched those out for 5.38's as the Firebird is my 1/8th mile only ride.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to get another set of 26 x 10's for now. I briefly considered the 28 x 9 M/T's @ 27.3" tall but I think the top end biased engine combo I have will like all the gear I can throw at it. I'll post up results as soon as I hit the track.

*EDIT* OK, just got off the phone with Summit. My tires are leaving tonight so I'll have them either Thursday or Friday. This car should leave like the proverbial scalded jackass now if the tires will hold it. 1.3x 60's here I come. :burn:
