Default Only difference between 2 and 3 rears?

As we all know, 2 and 3 series carriers are different and gears won't interchange. My question is between the two rear ends (meaning complete assembly: housing, carrier, gears, axles, etc.), is the ONLY difference the carrier/gears? So if I have a 2 series rear, I can replace the carrier and gears with 3 series carrier and gears, and then it will be identical to a 3 series rear end assembly?

Thanks

that's correct. all you need is the 3 series carrier and gears and it will install like normal. nothing is different between the housing and axles and whatnot.

Were all factory axles not 28 spline? I didn't think they used any other axles.
