i have raced for long enough to feel shift extension is bullshit and never talked about other than on internet boards. the other bullshit internet converter term is "STR" lol. go ask ATI or NCRC about those to issues....
i say dont worry about either of them. if you are pushing through the converter it will show up in your datalogs or rpm at finish line.

OK well i'm not even gonna get into the validity of shift extension or STR for that matter. Right now my rpms drop back to right about 6100 after she shifts. I was curious if going from a 4.10 with a 26" tire to a 456 on a 28" tire would move me to far up in the rpm's. I used the calculater and it shows an increase of about 200 rpm's at the same given mph. But throw the converter into the mix and I come up with the question in this post. So if the change in gear tire I am thinking of will not effect where the tach settles back to after a shift i'm in good shape.

Shift extension is very important
When the tranny shifts you don't want the rpms to drop back out of your powerband....You will loose time and mph.
EX: If your powerband is 6000-7100 rpm you don't want the fall back rpms after the shift (shift extension) to be 5000-5200 where you are not making much power. For instance my car makes 405hp @ 6000rpm - peaking 423hp @ 6700-6800 then flatlines to 7100rpm. If my converter had a shift extension of 5000-5200rpm where it makes 350hp then it would be missing 50+ hp than it would if the shift extension was 6000-6200 rpm (405-410hp) that it would have to makeup and slow it down on every shift. Add that time up and you would be missing some valuable ET there. I have logs to prove this if you have HPTuners

i fully understand the theory of shift extension. you will rarely hear an established race converter manufacturer talk about shift extension as a generic term. there are so many influences on where the converter will allow the motor to drop to after it shifts. my point is, discuss with the converter builder after giving them your entire details of the combo.
my converter flashed to 5000 rpm on a 200 shot and held second gear before hitting the 1/8th mile traps. i call that efficiency.
