Shifting through the 1/4 mile
hey everyone i have heard from several when dragging at a 1/4 track you only wanna go through 4th gear, in my only appearance, i found right before the end of te 1/4 everytime if i didnt shift into 5th i would redline, what may have caused this? was i shifting prematurely in the previous gears, or is it just the stock 323's in my rear? also is 18 psi a good seat for the rears? and do i wanna launch the car from 0-or like 3k rpms? how long does everyone let there cars sit in between passes?

all i know is my car was untuned when i took it there and the next day i ad it tuned and te guy said i had alot of detonation, and the timing was all off by like 9 degrees? all i know is she runs better than she ever did after the tune, and was wondering if the detonation and timing being off would have effected the way the car was performing as far as shifting goes

no, tuning has nothing to do with gearing, maybe you have 4.10's and you dont know it? 3.42's take 4th gear way past the 1/4, or is it 4th that you want to shift into at the end of the 1/4? As far as launching goes, every car is a little different and only track time will give you that answer.

spinning off the line=higher trap speed, higher e.t
hooking=lower trap, lower e.t
As far as hooking goes, there is a fine point that your car will launch great from but you have to find it. You will find your rev point...say 3k and then a quick slide out of the clutch. You should hear a chirp and grab.....well mine chirps anyways but its a quick drop of the clutch and the car doesnt bog but it doesnt spin. Took me many launches t find it. Find a local 1/8th that isnt too crowded and work on your 60's.

ok if you have 3.42s then 4th gear will take you to 144 mph at 6.2k.
if you have 4.10s then 4th will take you to 120 at 6.2k.
if you have 4.56s then 4th will take you to 108 at 6.2k
thast based off of your tire size (245/55/16) which would be 26.61"
and in order to find out what gears you have, you have to count how many times your tire rotates in 1 revolution of the DS.
hope that helps.

honestly...youre just driving bad...
my buddy was complaining about his ET when we went to the track one day..saying he missed 5th right before the traps...
bottom line...if youre going into 5th, your short shifting something horrible. Just like demonic posted above...even with 4:11's in the rear, you wont be going into 5th.
You just need to practice and get your driving down.

I know this car and it definitely does not have anything higher than 3.42's in the rear. It was a bone stock formula when my buddies gf bought it and then ricky bought it off her. I have no idea why you would be running out of gear as it doesnt seem possible. Im pretty sure the tires are right around a 26" as well.

maybe the clutch was slippin i dont see how bad driving would cause it to be at the redline through the traps.....
