Default Misfire or something up past 5700rpms, help!

Well just took my car out for a drive, got into it in 1st gear and at around 5600rpms the car sounded like a misfire or rev limiter or not enough fuel, something weird. What could it be? Its never done this before. It didnt do it in 2nd gear either, only tried it once though...

stock plugs n wires are on it

Are you sure you didn't hit the limiter? It could be pinging.

it's pinged since the day I bought it at 59k miles. its got 65k right now. It pings with the mail order tune, and it even pinged when the car was 100% stock. And no it cant be hitting the limiter cuz at the track I was shifting at 6,200 just fine...

The problem I'm referring to in this thread is much more than a ping. It feels almost like hitting the limiter where it cuts off fuel but the rpms dont drop at all. IDK, may be a bad fuel pump or spark plug? idk...

Check your spark plugs for cracks.

It is quite possible you hit the rev limiter, the stock tack is VERY slow...I recommend a shift light, if it was the rev limiter of course

it is NOT the limiter. I have it raised to 6200 in my tune. And like I already said, i've reved it to 6200 before at the track...

While you may have it raised to 6200 and reved it to 6200 before, what I said was that the tach is slow and your engine probably was at 6200 while your tach showed 5700

could it have anything to do with either the fuel cut or the closing of the TB? my car kind of cuts out around that range and I'm guessing the tach is just too slow for it

I know the stock tachs are sometimes slow, but it never has been slow in the past. I asked the tuner to raise the limiter to 6200 and ever since then, I could rev my car to what looks like 6200 on the tach before the limiter kicks in, so I'm assuming my tach is fairly accurate. But now, I'm having this problem about 5700 rpms or so, before the limiter kicks in. I'm betting a spark plug or wire issue, but I wont know till i change em i guess...

Last night I hit it in 3rd up to 6,100rpms and everything sounded and felt fine. Seems to only happen in 1st gear past 5,700rpms or so...

Could be the limiter is set to 6200 in anything but 1st?

Stock limiter is 6200. My tach is a tad slow but not that bad. In first it revs so fast it can make the prob worse. If you have bad plugs/wires they could be arching under load at a higher rpm.

1.) do you KNOW for a fact that your car is pinging? (and are you running premium gas?)
2.) Like already said, the stock limiter is set at 6200RPMS, although redline is 6000RPMs.
3.)Were your tires spinning? The stock tach can be misleading. And if its misfire your SES light should be flashing.

Well I've had multiple friends with car's that have pinged, most supercharged, but it all sounds the same when it's pinging, so I'd say I KNOW 99.9% sure it's pinging. And yea I ALWAYS run premium shell, chevron, or 76 (91 octane in Ca)

No my tires dont spin at 5700 rpms in 1st gear with drag radials. I know the stock tach can be misleading, but let me tell you all again, "normally" I can hammer it in first and my tach will read 6200 before the limiter kicks in. Now, i'm having this problem when my tach reads around 5700 rpms. So that tells me it's not the limiter, make sense? It kinda feels like the limiter, but that would make no sense at all. In 3rd gear I can go all the way up to 6200 on my tach with no issues. In 1st it's a different story though...

So what was your rev limiter set at before your tuner changed it back to the stock settings?...There really isnt anything that would make it misfire in 1st gear only..I mean..RPM's are RPM's..The only variable is how fast it revs thru each gear..

well if stock redline is supposed to be 6200 (from what I hear), then he may not have touched the limiter at all. I'm still confused...

Hmm weird...
I'd say clean out the MAF, then go for a drive and see.

So the other day I tried something. I took the car to redline in 2nd (visibly around 6200 on tach) and it was the SAME exact noise/feel that my car does in 1st at 5600 visibly on tach. So is it possible that the tach is only slow in 1st gear?? It never used to do this, I used to be able to spin it to 6200 visibly in 1st, sigh

lol...im pretty sure thats what everyone has been telling you from the beginning. Yes, its very possible that the tach is slow only in first gear..since thats the gear you rev thru the quickest..its very logical that if your tach is a little slow..this will be the gear that you will notice it the most.
