Clean it real well. I scrubbed mine down with a GOOD heavy duty degreaser. Let dry, and then have fun with the POR 15.
REMEMBER - DO NOT - DO NOT let it dry on your skin! Wear good gloves, and tight long sleeves. Have Laquer Thinner handy. I'd even swab the axle down with thinner, and let dry.
Safety too! Good solid jack stands, and let the rear axle hang.

It's rust preventative paint, and there are some other products they sell as well.

How much of this stuff is it going to take to do that job? And are you guys buying their cleaner products as well, or are you using your own?

It does not take much to do the axle. Make sure you use a degreaser and then it is recommended that you use Metal Ready from the POR15 folks. This has magnesium in it. It gets all the rust off and covers the axle with magnesium that assist in the binding of the POR15.

Im about to order my 12 bolt and when it comes in, does it need to be prepped? If so, what needs to be done? Im not sure what condition it will come in. Is this the best way to coat or protect the surface of the rear end? Is this POR15 job difficult? About how long does it take when ready to coat? How long does it last? Thanks

I have used a wire brush and also gone over the rearend too...
I would use it on my rear end but I painted mine red with factory paint.

hehe, I'm guilty of not listening to this advice My hands and forearms can prove that. Let me just say if it does dry, the only thing that's gonna help even a little bit is WD40
Also one more bit of advise....... If you have bleached hair like me don't hit your head on freshly painted rearend. The results are not pretty
