stock pan burning up 2-3 clutches??
Over the weekend i overheard a conversation about 4l60s with stock pans burning up clutches for the 2-3 shift. Said when WOT all the trans fluid is at the back of the pan and no fluid for the 2-3 shift and that everyone should run a deep pan with a baffle. Anyone else hear of this?

While with very very good 60 ft times yes its possible to evacuate the pan generally thats not and issue with the 2-3 shift and so has no effect on the 3-4 clutches. But a deep pan and not some fancy high dollar thing is a good idea and truck pan which are relativley cheap and a truck filter wil do the job very well

This problem usually does not happen to the vast majority of street vehicles. But if you are doing a very quick 60 foot time, (1.4 ET or quicker) then it is possible to pickup air on the initial leave and it will most likely affect the 2-3 shift. If you think that this is happening to you, then overfill the transmission by 1/2-2/3 of a quart and see what happens. This almost always solves this.

I personally think that a pressure gauge would tell the truth if in fact this is happening. We have a vette that we use for testing puposes that cut's very good 60's with the wheels in the air and does not have this problem with a stock pan. I do know that the vette has a lower sump but the band in this trans has been in there for 3 seasons with the same reverse input drum. Absolutly looks perfect without any skids on the drum. I understand that this is not the 3-4 clutch, however with the way this car leaves, it does not do this. Just my opinion. Vince

Agreed on the presure guage . It might be interesting to watch the guage in a car with the trans line at a fixed presue and a killer 60ft just to see if it can happen. I personally have not seen it , I have heard it spoken of several times but thats just talk. I have seen fluid a little low cause the pan to evacuate under those conditions but thats somethng different entirley as the 4L60E is very fussy about fluid level. I still like the deep truck pan when its feasable with the deep filter.
