gears or tranny??
which do you think would be less expensive:
1. buy a 12 bolt with 3.42s and change out those gears for 3.73s when i go to stage 2 of my build up (twin turbos and nitrous for road racing - stage 1 is just a 427 DD)
2. buy the 12 bolt with 3.73s now and have the trans re-geard to compensate. i would have 5th and 6th reduced so that in 1-4 (1-4 would remain stock) i get all the advantages of having lower rear end gears for racing, but on the highway, the lower 5th and 6th will keep the motor's rpms like or below stock levels so i can get some decent mpg. we are talking about a 427 after all

not sure which is cheaper, But tranny gears are pretty expensive, plus you've gotta pull it apart or pay for labor to have the gears installed correctly. It may be worth it though so you will still have that higher gear ratio even with your Stage II setup. You may as well do it now instead of getting 3.42's now and wish you would have re-geared the tranny later.
